Tunze Mangrove box

The boxes can be ordered now, I don't have them in the US yet as I was not planning to bring them in until we have black mangroves in stock again in the fall. These are legally collected as propagules here on the Texas coast and shipped to Germany for distribution, it doesn't make a lot of sense to have them shipped back so I was waiting until more were available for collection. The mangroves will be $23.24 US. The mangrove box will be $68.68.

Yes, we should be all set around November. The black Mangroves always have propagules in the fall/winter and depending on weather they sometimes produce a small summer crop, I checked in May and there were none and I will check again next month, it is an 8hr round trip so I don't get too much opportunity to check.

The boxes are available now. The Black Mangroves are seasonal and will not be available again in the US until December or January. Dealers have not brought these in for that reason, it would just be an empty box though you could put a Red Mangrove in it which most aquarium shops get in from time to time.

How do I order the box? I looked at my usual online stores and they don't offer it. I live in Texas so getting the mangrove should not be too hard.

I see Dickenson is kind of by Kemah and Galveston? I have one here, give me a call and I will get it out to you, I have only brought in a few figuring no one will want them until we can supply the mangrove. Please don't go dig up a black mangrove, it won't live. State law allows you to take the propagules if you just have a saltwater fishing license (at least just a few for personal collecting) but not the plants and the plants never transplant well, it is near impossible to move an established one. Wait until November- February when the plants have big ripe propagules.

Roger - I am not holding my breath. It has no leaves and does not seem happy. I am going to give it a month and replace it if it doesn't put out some new leaves.

Roger, will you be able to ship the black mangroves to California? Is the nursery in Texas certified to ship them to California? Where should we look for an announcement when these will be available?

Thanks!

Matt,

You just made me feel kind of stupid, I put so much thought into legally collecting them I never gave much thought into legal restrictions of shipping to other states. I had so many phone meetings with TPWD without even giving that any thought. I will need to look into that. The Black Mangrove exists almost worldwide in tropical seas so I would imagine if it can live somewhere it would already be there. I can't imagine it is a real threat but I suppose that doesn't mean they are necessarily legal. Does California restrict the Red Mangrove?

Hi Roger,

Sorry to make you feel that way. :D

From what I understand the permitting process is to help prevent the spread of diseases associated with the plants, not so much the introduction of exotic species. As far as what CA DF&G allows I couldn't tell ya. Just trying to figure out the regulations and restrictions for collecting of marine species is a maze of guidelines that makes my head spin. I usually just give up and call them: "I have license X, can I collect species Y in location Z and bring it into captivity?" So you may try contacting them. In general they are very nice and helpful.

Are you collecting the black mangroves yourself? I had heard they were from a nursery but now I don't recall where I read that.

Thanks,
Matt

Thanks for the link. Yes, I collect them myself. Under Texas law native plants and wildflowers are protected, but you can legally collect seeds and cuttings with a combo license of any non threatened or endangered species. In general this applies to individuals taking a few for personal use, and not a business collecting hundreds so we had to get clarification. The Black mangrove propagule looks like a giant lima bean. We then grow these out and supply them over much of the year in various growth stages. It takes about 4-5 years to get them to flower but they seem to be pollinated by bees and while we have plants that are about 7 years old that flower profusely, indoors we have yet to get propagules, the log term goal is to produce them in captivity.

Roger - My mangrove died so I am looking for a fresh seed. When do you expect to have some in stock? Or better yet, is there anywhere around Houston/Galveston that I can collect my own?

This sounds pretty interesting. The link above no longer works to the correct page, and a search did not reveal any results. Any news? are they still available? Pics?

Thanks
