Tunze Nano Skimmer Pump Problem

I hate to post this here, but I wasn't completlely sure where I should. When I went to the Tunze website it actually had the link here.

I have had my nano skimmer 9002 for about a year and half. I have been very happy with it during this time, with cleaning and maintance I have not had any issues with it until now.

I was working on my tank and as I put my hand in the tank I started to get shocked. I had noticed the tunze had stopped skimming and it turned out that it was causing the current in the water, and obviously the reason I was getting shocked.

I hadnt taken the tunze out of the tank in months. I had cleaned the pump about 4 or 5 months ago when the skimmer stopped skimming, but hadnt had any problems since then.

I checked the cord and the pump and I dont see any exposed wires or other electrical components.

I have been the hobby along time and I have had pumps stop working, but never have I been shocked by one, and I don't know how long it was shorting out into the water.

I know I have had the skimmer a year and half, but that doesnt seem that long for the main component of it to have this problem. Is this a common problem, is there some defect with this pump, I did see there is a newer model. Is there something you are or are not supposed to do with these pumps?

The manual has a two year warranty, but I am not sure if this is covered under the warranty or what I would need to do to replace or repair the pump.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks
Chris

Chris, send in the pump and we will replace it. What you describe is not normal, but it can happen and the usual cause is that the pump jammed at some point and overheated and it has a safety thermal overload switch but this can fail after so many on and off cycles and if it fails in the on position the pump can crack from the overheat. The safety is designed to fail in the off position, but occasionally they don't work as they are supposed to. In general the only thing to do is disassemble and clean the pump every 4-6 months. Use only vinegar and a brush.

Hello,

Thank you for the fast reply, should I send it here:
Tunze USA, 305 Victor St, Austin, TX 78753

I ran it once while it was still in the body in vinagar and water solution when it was about 6 months old, and the time this summer I took the pump out and cleaned it with the vinegar, and hadnt had any problems since then, but I didnt know if this caused any of the problems. Thanks for the help.

Chris
