Tunze or Koralia

I am adding a couple power heads and was trying to decide between the two. I will be using a RKL to control them. I have looked at some comparisons other place, but wanted your guys opinions.

Everyone seems to love Tunze but I haven't had any problems out of my Koralia's. I have a K2, a K4, and a Mag5 on my 75.

One thing about the Tunze's that aren't made for using with a controller is that you can't turn them on/off but once an hour because of a soft start feature they non-controlable ones don't have. They will not be guaranteed. I vote Tunze all the way if you can get the controlable ones. I have never used Koralia's and you might want to check and see how often they can be suddenly turned on and off..

Koralias are not good on a controller, ie wavemaker. That is why they made the controllable ones with the wavebox (or whatever you want to call it). Plus Ks are so large and bulky. Good thing is that they are extremely agile in the since that you can point them anywhere and have a good magnet. I vote for Vortech, although they were not mentioned in the question. :) Smaller footprint, does not take up another spot on your RKL, linkable with other vortechs (Mp40w that is), and you can find them for $300 each now (used on forums). I have one Mp40w (on full power) on my 40br, and love it. I have never used Tunze, so I cannot comment on them. Another cheap alternative is a Modded MJ, although they are not good on controllers either. I used one, and it scared me every day- loud, unreliable, and too many stories of them blowing the back out. I would suggest investing in good dry goods in the beginning. I lost alot upgrading mine. Good luck.

Vortech #1, Tunze #2...

Tunze may be #1 depending on the size of tank... Of course I haven't tried the Vortech MP10, so that may be an option as well...

Love my MP40w's... :D

I would love to have vortechs but can't swing it.

What do you think about running a power head for a couple of hours then off for a couple of hours instead of on and off for waves? Or should I just run it all day and turn it off at night?

The goal is to create random flow to keep detritus from finding a place to settle... If excess nutrients stay in the water column, your skimmer can remove them from your system...

What about for coral? Are you really gaining anything by using wave flow as opposed to just good random flow?

Flow for coral is important in promoting thicker branches and denser growth... Flow also brings food to coral and carries waste away... Some inverts will adjust their growth pattern according to wave patterns in order to optimize feeding... People have difficulty keeping Sea Fans because it is hard for some to replicate the wave pattern needed to feed them as well as feed the tank often enough and still be able to remove the waste without starving the fans or polluting the tank...

I kept a successful reef tank for years without any wave-making devices so they are not essential. You can achieve a certain amount of "random" flow by bouncing water flow off of the side of the tank, the flow from other powerheads etc..... That being said I have noticed a difference since buying controllable powerheads a few years ago and I think the flow they provide is superior and reaches more points in the tank.

The K8's are phenomenal. I can't imagine anything flowing better than those powerheads. I have one on my 8 foot tank and it blows all the way across.

Koralias are great pumps but NOT made for wavemakers if not of the contrallable variety. I tried it and they chattered like there is no tomorrow. It almost sounded like the pump was going to break apart.

Tunze are a better powerhead in my opinion but get the controllable ones as others stated if you are going to be starting and stopping them. I've had Koralias that I had to prod into starting and I modded my Tunzes so they sometimes start backwards. Overall I think Tunze is a better product though.
