i just bought a 6000, and when i opened it i noticed something wet looking on the impeller and the inside, do these things leak oil? should i just wash it off and use it? should i return it??
i know it is not water or saltwater since it doesnt evaporate but i dont know what it is

my lfs where i got it from said he never heard of it leaking anything

It is glycerin, used to test the pump.
It is harmless.

Sorry Roger...it's late, I am up, and bored. ;)

As Sean said, when they test run the pumps they fill them with a 1-4 solution of glycerin and distilled water. The solution protects the pumps in storage and keeps them from binding up. It is harmless to the aquarium, the total fill is 5ml, so just 1ml of glycerin.
