tunze silence 1073.040 - Pump is loud - need help!

Is it normal for this pump to have very loud humming noise even at lowest level???

It is not a vibration problem.

Anything I can do to help reduce the noise???

I run the 1073.50; it is dead quiet. Are your ceramic berings siezed to the shaft or sloopy loose on the shaft? Check those first.

Is the pump new or used? If it was used it could be just some hardened minerals in the bearings and cleaning is needed. If it is new, the most likely cause is a bearing has come forward out of its socket. Excessive plumbing restriction can also cause issues with air being trapped in the pump.

What does this mean by the bearing has come forward out of the socket?

I have had this, purchased new and its always been loud. I recently cleaned it the other day and made sure everything was tightened and cleaned. When I plugged it back in it seems to hum very loudly as well.

On each end of the shaft of the impeller it spins inside a bearing, the bearings press into sockets and should stay seated, the shaft spins inside these bearings which are ceramic with a silicon rubber shell.

I finally installed my Silence 1073.20 and it's louder than I thought. I do have an otherwise silent tank, but it's still audible about 15 feet away even with the sump doors closed. I had a Tunze hydrofoamer on my old skimmer and you couldn't hear it even right next to the sump. It doesn't sound like anything is jammed, and the pump is brand new.

Does the pump quiet down on its own or is something wrong?

I would open the pump and check that no foreign object is inside and check if the shafts have any small chips and that the bushing at the bottom is inserted into its socket. You also want to make sure it is installed so it is not in contact with a hard surface, if it is connected to rigid pipe a short length of tubing between the pump and pipe will help, the suction cup feet should be installed and the sides should be touching the sump. Unless air is trapped inside, with this model pump it is unlikely noise will resolve itself.
