Tunze size question

My 120 4'x2'x2' is set up and cycling with 180# LR. I currently have about 4 maxijet 1200's sitting behind the LR for added flow (about 2100 gal/hr total tank flow). I am interested in more flow, but don't want to add any more power heads. The Tunze streams seem perfect for this application. But, I have a few questions.

1) I have the ubiquitous Southdown sandstorm question. Will the units cause an uproar if they are placed behind my LR and a the flow is somewhat shielded by the LR?

2) Would one larger unit work to increase flow throughout the tank (I really have reached my budget limits for now). In this scenario, I would add another unit and controller later on. How much better would two smaller units be?

3) Do I need the mounting extensions? I would like the unit to sit about 12" down from the side.

4) After reading above, please make a suggestion or two about what setup I should go with (from basic to the best)

Thanks in advance.

Matt

I have a Stream system in my 90g SPS tank (barebottom) -- two 6100's with the the multichannel controller.

There are so many ways to set up flow with these pumps that I feel all of your needs can be met with one or two pumps. However, ideally I think two are best due to the added flexibility. But if budget is a concern, you could use just one 6100 with a controller.

Regarding placement, I would guess that you will likely need to place it higher up in your tank, as 12" down will probably cause a sandstorm.

As far as the smaller units, I assume you're talking about the 6080? I believe these units are not electronically controlled, so you lose some flexibility there. With a sandbed, I'd want all the flexibility possible. Again, I recommend any Stream pump you get be electronically controlled, especially if you have a sandbed.

These pumps are awesome.

Thanks Darin,

Matt,

The flow pattern is roughly 2' by 2' at 2' away so loering the pump is unwise. Further they have tight tolerances and need service every few months- don't bury them in the rock. The pressure is too low if the rock is in fornt of the pump. Choose the right model. I would purchase a 6010 and be done with it, don't through good money after bad and try to piece together something here and their. The 6010 can be turned down if needed, when you have doubts an electronic pump offers the control necessary to avoid any problems like you mention simply by turning down the flow. Two pumps would be better but with a return on the opposite side it will work very well.

Thanks for all the help so far.

The 6010 is a stream 6000 with a single controller, right? I will probably go with two 6000's and a multicontroller.

What brackets do I need for the pumps? My canopy surrounds the tank completely on three sides (front, left, right) and has an approximately 2 inch lip which runs the whole length of the back. My tank is a 120 all-glass aquarium with overflows in the back left and right. Can I attach the bracket to the plastic "lip" which extends into the tank about 1cm? If so do I need one of the bracket kits?

Thanks

Matt

You should be able to span the lip with set 3000.244- it is designed for Oceanic because they are the only friendly people in the industry who provided trim for R & D, everyone else thought a piece of plastic was like some great industrial secret. You should also be able to use the delivered installation hardware for attachment to the overflows.
