Tunze Skimmer help (9010)

Hello,

Not sure where to begin but I've been unable to get my skimmer to start for a while now and not sure if it is human error or something defective with the hydrofoamer. Any help would be appreciated.

The housing and tubing seem fine. I think the problem is with the hydrofoamer or driveshaft. I soaked the driveshaft in vinegar and tried to reassemble. No luck. I noticed that the casing of the Hydrofoamer itself is nicked through and letting in water. The pump starts and everother time or so will seem to function, but not sure if it is with the voracity I remember. In any case, no bubbles.

The driveshaft is missing one of the foot breaks, but I remember it working with only one before. I almost replaced the driveshaft but then I noticed the crack in the hydrofoamer mentioned above.

where would you recommend I start? Thanks.

I suspect the crack is a normal casting mark, the plastic shell you see is really just cosmetic besides its function of holding on the housing, etc, the waterproofing is all done by polyurethane resin poured over the motor. The plastic cast is not water tight, it has bleed holes to let water in to remove any air which would make it partially buoyant. A photo of this would be a big help.

The missing break shoe is a definite issue, without this the impeller will not spin at full speed and may spin backwards. It is part of a clutch system that stops a backwards spin and the pump won't work right without this system being intact.

If the "crack" is what I think it is, you likely just need a new 3000.600 drive unit.

Thanks for the quick response. Here is a pic of the crack I mentioned. It's definitely physical damage but might not matter considering how you described the resin seal. If that's the case, please let me know the best route for ordering the driveshaft.

That is normal, it is a sort of tear drop shaped hole and it is their on purpose to let water in and the air can come out the vent hols on top.

I would replace the full drive unit, the shaft won't include brake shoes and losing a break shoe often means that the cogs on the magnet are worn, part 3000.600, you can order it on Tunze.com. Replace every included part.
