im up in the air with these 2....what would be the pros and cons of the flow. i know about the aiming but is the flow out of the stream 6105 wide or is is a, well.......more of a stream? i know if i get the tunze i will get a controler, so whats the diff between the 2 controllers?

The stream from the 6105 will not be as wide as the Vortech, but it will reach further. You can also replace th suction housing on the 6105 with that of the 6205, and the flow is comparable to the Vortech width.

I always side with Tunzes. They are far quieter than Vortech, and they can be tucked up in the corners of the tank out of view.

Both are great quality and have excellent service.

The Vortech's have a wider flow pattern, one that Tunze cannot replicate IMO. I have heard about all the noise that the VorTech's make.... But honestly, I have been around a bunch and I don't hear them at all. The Gen1 were a bit noisy but the new Gen2's are quiet as can be. JMO

I agree with James in that they are both quality products with great service.

I have a vortech mp40w and a tunze 6101 on my 90g. Personally i like the vortech because of the wide flow and under tow. The tunze has a further and stronger stream but not the width as previously posted. The noise from the vortech is a downside for them. Also an upside to the vortech is that each unit has its own controller so adding another one is no problem. Tunzes you need to buy the multi controller. They are both great and get the job done! Choosing one or the other is hard. If I had to get another... I would go with another vortech because I dont have a multi controller.

very good point

The flip side is you have to buy the controller for each Vortech since it is included. You have the choice of only one controller. With Tunze, you only need one controller and there are more choices. Three models from Tunze, and then there are aftermarket controllers such as the Aquasurf and Profilux as well.

Tunze by far...just had the previous model, the 6101, stop running and have sent it back to tunze USA. I just got an email stating they would be upgrading my 6101 to the new 6105! Now that is service!

without getting into a tunze vs vortech battle:

I like vortech for a few reasons; wide flow, good undertow, heat is outside tank.

I like tunzes for a few reasons; more concentrated flow, more manuverable to where you want the flow.

Both are good pumps, just have different reasons for getting them. With a tunze you are able to point it "somewhat" in a direction you wish. With a vortech your stuck with it on the wall.

The new Tunze 6x05 can be pointed more than "somewhat". They have full rotation.

I am so debating this as well.... Vortechs must go on the side of the tank correct? Do they work just as well if put on the back of the tank?

well i went out and got the vortech!!! i think i made the right choice! i love the pulse mode.. it moves water to a wave motion (i put a 1/2" wave in the 125) with that slight wave my frog spawn 5' away sways back and forth nicely! the noise is not that bad. i think the water going to the basement is louder :) i replaced my korila magnum 6 with this pump and what a choice...granted i loved the flow out of the magnum but i wanted to controle it better. i had the magnum on a red sea wave maker and worked with no problems at all....but i wanted even more controle!

oooohh yea... the flow is super wide!!!!!! and it will put a wave in a 4' tank too(i tried it in one of my frag tanks first)

I have had the Gen2 Vortech for about 6 mos in my 55G and absolutely love it. I don't have any of the noise problems that some write about. Coral health and polyp extension is much better than with the Koralia's I had before.

It's a great pump, hope its as durable as it is effective.
