Tunze Top Off System

Hi guys,
I am setting up a new 50 gallon SUMPLESS reef tank. I am contemplating purchasing the Tunze Osmolator Top off system.
Question: I know I can mount the sensor in my tank on the glass above the water line, but how much room between the water level and the lip(or top) of the tank do I need?
Question: I may run the top glass covers on the tank, will this impair the sensor at all?
Final Question: If I purchase the kit, it comes with everything but a container to hold my water correct?

There's a little eye candy for everyone!

Thank you:smokin:

The tip of the sensor only needs to be a couple of centimeters (~2-3) below the water line. So I would keep the water line about ~3 centimeters below the lip. You would have to adjust the float switch and sensor accordingly so you dont flood over. I have mine set up like that and everytime I stick my hand in the tank, the displacedment would trigger the alarm.

Having glass over the tank wont affect the sensor, but It might have problems fitting over the wires / sensor and float switch holders.

Correct, if you purchase the kit, all you need is the container to hold your water.

Kbecker,
Thank you so much for the reply! Where do you recommend the best or most cost efficient place to purchase?
Thank you

I purchased mine from Premium Aquatics. I have seen it at Marine Depot, but I dont know if it qualifies for their free shipping. IF it does that would be the most cost effcient place to purchase it. I have never purchased anything from Marine Depot. I have however, purchased a lot of stuff from Premium Aquatics and have been very pleased with their customer service.

Sorry for the late reply, I am at the factory and it has been incredibly hectic, normally even when I am here nothing goes unanswered but I have been in a car most of the time and in meetings the rest so I don#t have much option. The unit is complete except the reservoir. Given the difficulties encountered with the plastic trim I would say about 2" should be given for safe installation of both sensors. I have seen people totally rely oin the optic sensor and leave out the safety switch to allow for less space consumption but I really don#t recommend it. I get back Thrusday should you need more help.

KBecker and Roger,
Thank you for the replies and for the help! So you are saying basically Roger that I need two inches from the bottom of my molding or aquarium trim to the water surface?
I think that will work. Hmmmmmmm, I will take measurements again. also, what size stream kit would you recommend for a 50 gallon tank with LPS corals?
My tank is 31x18x20.5. I was interested in a Tunze wave box but have sinced realized my tank is too small.
I would like the back and forth current though that the wavebox does. How about two streams, one on each end?
Thank you

I use it to dose kalk. You can set the eye at any level you want.It is very accurate.I would use a sump that way you can set water level in sump dose kalk and hide heaters and carbon etc.The unit works well and the alarm(foat switch) works like a charm. You will never flood the system. If you want to dose kalk you have to buy the dispenser. It is a bit pricy(complete system) but I find it keeps my alk and ph dead level accurate. You don't get wild fluctuations. If you want to get the most out of the unit get the kalk dispenser. You can use a 5 gal container so you don't need to buy one.The tracks are a bit of a pain in the ***,you will have to use both 1 for alarm 1 for the eye. When you first set up the unit set the water level below the eye then turn it on.I didn't do that the first time and found the water going above the line.

Aquaglobal,

Not to discount what Roger said, but from personal experiance you can get the water line much closer to the rim if you stack spacers under the clamp / bracket of the sensor. That is what I did to my system. I have about 3 cm or 1/4" of clearance below my rim. Now that might be considered very dangerous to some (much less safe then Roger's recommended 2"), but the osmolator is very accurate and the various saftey features add to that fact. Having the float switch activating just a hair above the water line helps too.

The best advice is play with the sensor level to where you like your water line and then adjust the float switch accordingly.

Hey guys,
Thank you again Kbecker! Thank you also Steve. Thats just what I wnated to hear Becker! I will purchase one, as I do not think I can go wrong with this set-up!
Hell, the chinese top off units are 100.00! Another 60.00 and I have a solid German top off system!
Great info, Thank you very much! THis should compliment my Deltec skimmer nicely!
Thanks!
