Turnover Rate For Broodstock Rack System

Hi All,

Well as some of you know I have been working on a broodstock rack system. I will post pics here at somepoint of it. I just filled it and have it running/cycling with saltwater and some fresh liverock as well.

It consists of seven 10 gallon tanks on the upper level and four 29 gallon tanks on the lower level. All the water flow is done through the returns using a ReefFlo Dart. It is plumbed in 1.5" returns with each inlet to each tank being 1/2 " controlled with a ball valve.

My temperature is maintaining nicely and I am adjusting the return line height to create enough surface water flow to eliminate the scub forming on the surface. This is all located in our basement that without a heater in the water maintains about 72 degrees. The broodstock tanks are maintaining nicely at 79 degrees and just kicked the heater up to 80.

My main question is how much turn over rate/water flow do you guys typically have in your broodstock tanks. Right not I would consider these tanks low flow. The water is being exchanged out nicely and temperature throughout the tanks is all equal just not sure if the flow is sufficient. There are no fish in the system. All current pairs are in seperate QT tanks.

Any suggestions/ideas are suggested. I have only maintained reef systems in the past and always set them up to have moderate to high flow.

If you're going to use this sytem for broodstock only, then as high as you want it, turnover shouldn't be an issue. I think I'm running anywhere from 3times on some to as much as 6 times volume per hour on others. Key here will be water changes.
