turnover rate?

Water movement is more important than turnover, and random water movement even more so, along with good placement. A fully stocked and matured sps tank will react differently with 40x turnover than a new reef with only frags. I have 40x turnover in my reef that has random flow and mostly frags, but will increase flow as the corals mature and create dead spots.

I'm going with 80x turnover rate in my upcoming sps tank, and I currently have 50x turnover in my mixed coral tank.

40x would probably be good, but it's all about turbulent flow and moving water around corals. 20x is probably too low, ideally you want a lot more flow.

I personally want more than 70x flow because:
1. I like to see hermits fly across the tank and crash against the rock
2. It keeps detritus from building up anywhere
3. SPS love the turbulence (as long as it's turbulent, not necessarily random linear)
4. my zoos love flow too
5. it's fun watching my fish fly around the tank to fight against the current.

why not have high flow? makes everything that much more exciting.

Everytime a hermit wanders in front of my low eductor I get a cheap thrill.

that is great, im doing a closed loop next time for just this reason.

I have my pumps on a remote switch, so what I do sometimes, is turn the pumps off, and put a few frozen food pieces in front of the outlet, and I wait for all the nassarius, hermits, and fish to come to the outlet, and then BAM i shoot them all over the place. It's so great! I actually chipped my acrylic with a hermit hitting the front of the tank =(( cruel? Not really... they aren't harmed =)

in my old 29 i used to have 120x and everything used to be nice, fish at first had a hard time but then, was all playing agains the pumps to see who was stronger, in my new 120g i have around 30x times going up to 50x when my frags start growing

80x?

ok, now how do I create 32000 gallons of flow?

Seriously. I have 2x6200, 2x6100, 2x wavebox and a dart return.

What's that add up to?

haha, yeah...

80x on a 68 gallon tank is only about 5500gph, which isn't hard to obtain.

this is on your 375g? well.. that sucks =(

there are big fat jacuzzi 1hp pumps out there =P

I went to a BB for that very reason. I have noticed my growth rate increase everytime I add more flow. Bigger is better in this example.
