Turnover sump to display

I think thats a highly debatable topic. I've been told min 2 times/hour and have heard people going less. IMO the important thing is your total circulation for example, if you have a 200 gal tank and are returning 200gph, them you should aim for 3000 gph of internal circulation weather its a closed loop or power heads.

your sump flow should not be for circulation. It should be for filtrattion. So you should only need slightly more flow than your skimmer can move. Anything over that is overkill, wont hurt, but a waste of electricity and money.

Yes, a common mistake that most people make is confusing sump turnover rates with circulation rates. Circulation rates are much much higher.

My opinion is that sump turnover rate should be about 3-5x. Or, closely match it to your skimmer's turnover rate.

I have a 40 gallon main display, 15 gallon sump. I run a 250gph pump. My skimmer pump is about 275gph.
