Tuxedo Urchin

My tank is at that delicate stage of perfectly stable, and 'Im bored and want something new'.. Looking for something substantial enough to stand out, but something that wont be in danger of being picked at by my maroon clown, and something that wont bother my mandarin.

My polyp colonies are attached to giant rocks, so cant easily be 'transported' sround the tank, snd I think the maxi mini anrmonies will simply refuse to move.

That said, I think a tuxefo urchin might be the way to go. Other than on the back of my tank, I dont let coralline build up though Would this be enough for one or are they superfast eaters?

Nothing hsd been added to the tank for at least 3 months (polyps), and the mandarin was the last fish added (Julyish..)

Tuxefo good?

I have a tuxedo urchin in my 125 reef. He is a pain. He sticks to corals and literally rips them apart, mostly just the softies though. Then he is walking around with pieces of coral stuck to him. I was really upset when he ripped my ricordeas completely in half. He doesn't go near my rock flower anemones or bubble tips at least. He does eat quite a lot. I have rocks that have been stripped completely bare of all coralline algae and anything else that was on them. If you were closer I would give him to you, lol.

nix, that sounds more like my pincushion urchin than my tuxedo. my tuxedo 29g) rarely carries anything around except empty snail shells, he spends most of his time eating algae off the rocks/glass and is pretty much totally non-destructive. i don't see that he's made a dent in the coralline.

my pincushion (14g), otoh, carries anything that isn't nailed, errr, glued down. that includes snails, occasional polyps and even feather duster worms. i have been so tempted to take him back but he hasn't really damaged anything and he's quite entertaining! he eats a LOT of coralline!

I agree I can't say I've ever seen a tuxedo rip corals apart I have 4 currently they are good cleaners but don't recomend if you have lots of loose frags about.

I have had 2 tuxedos in my 75g for over a year now and can honestly say they haven't bothered any corals whatsoever and like Nina said they just carry around shells, debris and even some balls of chaeto lol

can't speak to thier behaviour in the DT But if you have any green hair algea These guys are the ones to clean it up. I bought 2 about a week ago and stuck them in my overflow which was pretty much over run with hair algae. fast forward a week and its almost clean!!!
I'm sure within a few days they'll have it gone. Then I'll try one in the DT and see what happens
