Two Purple firefish?

petoonia

HereWeGoAgain...
I want a pair of Purple Firefish. Should I just add two at the same time or do I need to get a mated pair?

Add them both at the same time. Find a LFS that has them together in their tanks. If you add them at separate times there will be fighting.

I would not add two at all. I got two and they were fine for about a year. After that, the fighting started and one survived. The survivor is doing great. Just my .02

Sometimes you can spot a pair this way.

I purchased 3 reds (Moe, Larry and Curly) at the same time and from the same tank at the LFS. All three sleep together in the same little cave and hang out together when they are out and about.

ref firefish are have a different behaviour then purple. they are much more docile.

I used to own a pair of red which they seemed to get a long fine.

On my other tank my purple pair were not so lucky, one bullied the other into hiding and eventually starved to death.

My observation at the LFS is whenever they put a bunch of firefish in a tank most would end up with torn fins. I'll get a mated pair, else I'll stick to one a tank. I am contemplating to add a purple and a red, to be frank I have no idea how it would turn out.

I had 2 reds and 1 purple in the same tank and over the course of 8 months they all jumped. But there was no fighting that I ever saw.

How intent are they on leaving the tank? I have glass tops and slotted overflows. They could probably squeeze into the overflows if they were insistant on breaking out:)

Well - I believe that agression between the firefish themselves can cause them to jump.

I also know that my purple firefish is quite jumpy. I have to give him lots of warning when I clean the glass because he darts all over and even jumped up through the eggcrate I have on top of my tank once.

Just yesterday when I was doing a water change he jumped from the middle section of my tank and landed in the right hand section - made me think of Shamu! Unfortunately I am always worried about him if I don't see him - affraid he went carpet surfing.

Well now im confused. So Im guessing I should try to look for a mated pair. There is an LFS here that has a bunch in the same tank, I'lll have to see if I can find two that seem to like each other. If not I'll just get one.

ambar, how is it that you give him warning?

I move the mag float slowly to the middle of the front glass. Then he will move into his hiding place. Then I can clean the glass without a problem.

He is always out in the open in the daytime so this just lets him have a chance to get to a safe location before I move it more quickly in cleaning the tank.

Hopefully that makes sense.
