Two questions.

1. To much flow?

I have a 75 and i was beginning to have some dead spots, lil cyno and brown algea build up so I increased flow. I now have a K4 1200, K3 850, Return from canister 340 GPH Total 2390GPH ........31X flow.

nothing is waving around to bad but i was wondering what everyone else has in their tanks.

2. I have a serpent star and some Fire Fish they like to hide in the same rock when they go to sleep should i be worried about the star eating one of them?

i have 60x my tank volume per hour in just powerheads. My tank is completely healthy.

I have a fire fish goby that always hides in the same spot, and a wrasse that does too, and my serpent star does not bother them. Unless he is a green brittle star, or extremely hungry, you shouldn't have a problem.

I wouldnt count the canister filter as a beneficial flow source. The two koralias alone should be enough but there placement and the LR placement are just as important
Where are they placed and pointed?

THe serpant is a with caution critter. Mine was fine for yrs and then started eating my cleaner shrimp.

This is alot of flow. I think fish would be fine and if well stocked then this additional flow could be very helpfull but coral wouldnt do well with this amount of flow. JSYK

My corals do fine with that flow... granted i keep mostly sps, but even the softies zoas and palys all thrive in my tank.

1. I have a 150 gal mixed reef with 10,000 gal per hr flow that is 66Xper hr as long as your corals are placed properly and the sand bed stays in place there is no such thing as to much flow .but you can have the wrong kind of flow for a particular type of coral ,understanding your corals needs is the key to a successfull captive reef . 2.serpent stars are fine ,brittle stars can be predators I hand feed mine so they are happy not having to work for a meal .

340 gph shooting out of a nozzle should not count towards flow? how do you figure if it pushes water enough to have visible flow? granted maybe it shouldn't be counted as a full 340 gph

and its just a banded serpant star its a lil red, but he has not attacked anything yet he has been in for one week i just saw them all in the rocks tonight

Its 340 at the source and MB 200 or 250 at the return.Then as it collects and the media gets dirty then this will reduce it more and its a up and down and never constant. It wil help but not enough to matter.

If you understand flow and its real benefit then the more you have the better you will be. There is no one way to get the flow right but fine tuning it to your setup.

I like the rockwork.
You have them facing up and looks like there facing each other. This would cause them to break the movement whene the streams meet. You want a constant good circulation. There are a few ways but 1 sure way is to place 1 on the right side back facing front glass more toward the bottom then the other on the left facing the front center glass off set from the other also facing more toward the bottom. Whene they meet it will push the flow toward the back center glass and out. Then the repatition of this will cause a good steady flow around the whl tank. Plus it keeps uneatin food, fish waste and other debris from collecting on the bottom.

well 30X turn over just seemed excessive but i guess ill leave it hopefully i will not have any dead spots now

BTW the K4 is facing towards the back glass slight up on the right,K3 pointed slightly towards front glass pointed further up and the return pushed back to front towards a troublesome dead spot i had.

The minimum is around 20 times and your above that with the 2 koralias. Its your palcement thats the weakness.

And I will keep and eye on the star but if something goes bad with him i dont think i will ever be able to get him out!

What type of corals do you keep in the tank ( or plan on keeping ) ? My two SPS tanks have around 70X flow.

Demonsp this circulates completly around the tank and i have not seen any dead spots maybe this will show you what i have going now. I like ur idea but i dont think it would work well with the current placement of my corals

I see them faceing more toward the surface so the more important bottom where fish waste and uneatin food with other debris will collect. Im sure it would be fine with low to no stock but as your stock grows the flow might need adjusting.
