two return pumps?????

I am planning my 120 and i have most of what i want to do with it down to a tee, but not the flow.

I was planning on using either 2 ehiems or 2 mag 1200s in the return section.

Can i put 2 pumps in the sump with only using the overflow for water draining from the tank?? The over flow is only 10" long i have 2*durso and the return plumbed.

The tank i have is acrylic and has a 2 holes drilled for the return lines to fit into, i was wondering if i could use 1 return pump and have the connected to those holes, then have the other retrun pump connected to 2*wavy seas...

The tank is a 120 and going to be sps dominant.

Also is 2*Tunze 6100 or 6000 plus 1 return pump enough flow....do i need 2 return pump...well not need but how much will it help?

I would hook up the second pump in a closed loop configuration. One eheim or mag 1200 should be enough flow through the sump so that the water can be skimmed.

Two Tunzes would work great in place of the second pump. They would be a much larger investment initially, but would use much less electricity and would provide more flow than the second pump.

All your asking for is trouble by trying to use two return pumps. There really is no point in trying it. If you need a higher flow pump then buy a higher flow pump

I honestly wasnt sure if i could use one or not.....

If using one pump and the tunze will be sufficiant then i shall do that i jsut wasnt sure because adding another pump in there is alot easier then adding the tunze...

I would love to use a bigger pump but the overflow is small and wont handle a bigger pump!

If your overflow can't handle a bigger pump, then it probably won't be able to handle two pumps either.

If you really would prefer to use a second pump, you still can in a closed loop configuration, that way the overflow won't be a limiting factor and you won't have to worry about finding ways to quiet 2x the amount of water you currently have going into your sump. It could also reduce the chances of your sump overflowing during a power outage because the water level in the tank would be higher with two pumps feeding the overflow.

If money wasn't an object, I would go with the Tunzes. As mentioned previously, they will draw less power and generate more flow, but they are also quiet, can also provide variable flow if coupled with a controller and generate very little heat.

I use two pumps as a safety. They are connected to different circuits, that way if one of the circuit trips the other will still run or if one pump goes out...

However I would be careful about running too much flow through your sump, it could cause micro bubbles. I run two 1260's and my sump is a 60 gallon about half full of water. I don't have a micro bubble problem but if I added too much more flow it would.

If you want to increase the flow either a closed loop or ph's is the best way to go.

I like the idea of two return pumps, two heaters, two skimmers, two chillers and etc. In fact that would be my ideal setup, which would cost a lot more. My tank is running one return pump, I imagine that if it were to fail in a hot day, my display tank would be fried as my chiller is plumbed to my sump.

Of course the overflow need to be able to handle it in the first place.

I think i am jsut going to go with the tunze and be safe tho....dont want to have problems dont the line with power outages ect..
