Two Step Setup?

I heard of this two-step setup to add calcium to the system. Firstly, I am still not sure how the addition of Kalkwasser, calcium etc work. What additives do you normally use without a setup in the first place? Secondly, how does this two-step setup work? Any explanation or guidance is very welcome! Thanks.
