Im still new to the marine world. Ive been reading for about a month now. I have the tank and all setup with ro water already. Waiting on my powerheads to add salt.
Ive been lloking for a local place with a decent price on live rock, already cured so I wouldnt have to cook any of it.
I also found this rock at a local store, alot of people use it in their dtiches lol. I was told its from the ocean here in NC, but im not sure. It looks ocean like, but want to make sure its not bad.

If anyone can figure out what im talking about please give me a heads up. Its kinda heavy rock, looks like shell indentations all over it. Usued to stop soil errosion in ditches mainly i think.
Im in the Havelock, NC area

I don't know about that rock. First of all it will have none of the beneficial bacteria that you will need in your tank.

I would look for a "good" local fish store or a good "reef" store. Many of these sell cured live rock. It's where I bought the rock for my tank.

I paid $5.99 per pound for the cured rock that I bought. I would hold out and look for the correct stuff.

You can even buy cured online though you may have some die off in your tank but not near as bad as uncured.

I hope you find what you are looking for.

Regards,

Pat

Well I had planed on getting some quailty LR, but wanted to find out if this other rock could be used as a base rock, then be seeded with some good stuff lol. My local store isnt very good at all, and they charge 8$/lb...

Whats the make up of the rock?
Who knows what the rock could leach back in to your system. Depending what its made of, it could wreak havoc with your ph. Could be full of phosphates as well.

Stick to stuff from the tropical ocean, or the DIY agrocrete if you want to savbe some money on base rock.
