UHoh, may have ICH! maybe?

I put a post out on the 16th of the month about my green clown goby going sickly pale. He's always hiding so I couldnt see him, but today he was perched on a kenya tree and I snuck up on him to take a look and... there it was... tiny little white speckles on his body and fins!

I did read the "have ICH" thread (thanks waterkeeper) and will have to go boxing day shopping for a QT and other goodies, but I am stumped. Is this ich? none of my other fish are showing signs (clowns, chromis, mandarin). I havent added anything to the tank in months to introduce it.

Could it be something else?

SHOPPING LIST FOR QT: 8-12Gal tank c/w lid, flow, heat. (I have a rio nano skimmer kicking around too)

Is that it? Should I put anything else in the Qtank other than water? (rock, sand, rubble?)

ok so ick is caused by stress it so it dosent just have to be on one of the fish you buy to be intro.. to your tank. imo i wouldnt even sweat it if he only has alittle bit i would just up his feeding alittle and cal it good it will go away in no time thats what i did with my fish wenever i got it and look i have never had a fish die from it yet. so if it is not bad just up the diet on him

Well thats a bit of a relief!

I have tried to feed him a bit more, but will concentrate on it now. Thanks for the advise.

If he's eating, feed him garlic infused pellets.

Buy a pack ( if you don't already have ) of pellets.
Get a clove of garlic, slice it.
Throw it in the container.
Shake
Shake some more
Shake a bit more
Open up the container
Check if the pellets cover the cloves.
If it does, then you're golden.

You can leave the garlic in there as long as you have the food, but it dries up in a week.

You can feed them immediately, or a few hours later if not days ( for best results )

Garlic helps their immune system, strong immune system = better health. Less illnesses = No Ich

The food I have was soaked in garlic. Mixed a batch and was generous with it, but it was from diced stuff in a can. I now have a garlic addative, seachem I believe. Is it the same as natural?

Judging from the 2 replys I got, I need to treat this with food. Should I look into a quarantine tank then, or use a quarantine basket inside the tank? The sick one is the smallest and least food competitor of the bunch. Doesnt eat much at feeding time, and its gone before he can decide on seconds.

what kind of fish is it might i add? I just came down with ich too. My tang has it. None of my other fish do. Tangs are apparently ich prone. I'm away from home for the holiday...but my cleaner shrimp is helping. I guess it will eventually go away on its own.


I dont have a QT or the space for one...so i i may have to look into another solution. I plan on garlic feeding. and giving kick-ich a shot.

Please read the thread above on ich. You are likely headed for trouble if you do not treat your fish with either hypo or copper. Some fish are more resistant to ich than others. If all fish have not been treated, it can smolder in a tank as long as there are fish in there and one day BAM!

the funny thing is...all my fish i bought from my LFS, they keep in copper for a few weeks before even SELLING THEM. But ich can come in on ANYTHING...rocks, inverts...you name it.

yea but USALLY IT IS CAUSED BY STRESS and DO NOT use copper or hypo in the dt you could ruin the tank for good. just try what i said IF it starts to get worse rather then better then take it out and put it in a qt and do hypo or copper.

Again, I read the ich thread (regarding my green clown goby), and will try out the Hyposalinity method in a QT if need be, or let it ride and see where Im at in a week or so.

QT Questions: Just glass, flow and water? NOTHING else?

Ich (actually crypto in saltwater, right?) can't reproduce in a tank without a substrate, so don't add sand! If you can get your goby in QT without a substrate for a month, it should clear up.

Also, slightly higher temps tend to speed up the "ich" life cycle. Bump your heater up by 1-3 degrees, and it should cut back on the amount of time your fish needs to be quarantined!
