undulated triggers

are undulated triggers boring fish that do nothing but hide, or do they swim in the open? I was thinking of a dedicated 75 gallon for a undulated, but i dont want a boring tank with nothing swimming, if thats the case i will just gets some fuzzy dwarf lions or something? any info would be appreciated.

That is a tough one. They do like to hide a lot when they aren't chasing another fish, but they do grow out of it some and get out there, but they don't seem to be a fish that swims laps, they just keep an eye on things it seems. I think Titan *69 has an undy tank. Perhaps he will chime in.

I have had one for a couple weeks and he/she is very shy. hard to feed too.

Do it...Undulates are great fish for a single specimen tank, they become much more entertaining with age, they move small rocks around in their mouth, dig in the substrate, eat out of your hand, bite your hand if you let them (though I don't reccommend it). Very bright fish.

I have a 5in undulate trigger in my 120 agressive community, Mine has very vibrant colors and is always out and active during the day, but they do go to "sleep" at night and you probably wont find them in a tank filled with lr. But with age they do become very showy and will (in time) become very tame .....
YOU SHOULD MOST DEFINATELY GET ONE, THEY ARE GREAT FISH !!! :]

thanks i think i will do it. i have been having so much trouble making a list of fish that are compatible, i figure i will just skip all of that and just have one fish.

Maybe I will be the only one that chimes in a with a not so possitive note.

Undy's are great fish IMO because of the thoughness or hardiness of the fish. They can live through most anything.

Swimmers? Other than feeding time I NEVER see my UNDY.

To me they are the most WILD of trigger fish. IE my Undy hides from EVERYTHING... people walking heavy by the tank, my cat, watching a movie loud... ANYTHING will send her to her cave.

It might be a individual basis that the Trigger behave differently. I know through my experience that the female's seem to grow slower and are far less aggressive.

Again I will draw the comparison... Kinda like a Pitbull... they have a bad wrap. You can have one your whole life and it is the best dog ever never have a problem. Then again some people have horror stories about the dog.

Not to tell you what to do... but how you are asking the question doesnt sound like you want a fish that hides a bunch. What about a pair of Niger Triggers / Sargassam Triggers... they swim ALOT and a fun too... Again not telling you what to do... Get an Undy I have one... MINE HIDES :) alteast 75% of the time.

People always come over and ask... " Why do you have the big fish tank with no fish in it??? "

My undy is "shy" in the sense that when you walk up to the tank, he ducks into a cave.

You have to wait 10-15 seconds before he'll come back out and resume what he was doing with you close to the tank...

Other then that... he's not a lap swimmer, but is always out and about moving shells, rocks, sand, and playing fetch with Hermits..

(he has one hermit in a conch shell that he hasn't figured out how to kill yet, that he puts in a corner of the tank... as soon as it gets 4-5 inches away from the corner, back to the corner it goes)

Of course some of his adventures take place all over the tank, including behind the rock-work, but it's not from shyness or hiding, there's just cool rocks/sand/shells to move around back there too.

Their colors get so vibrant as they age...

I agree... that is how my Undy was in the first couple of years...

He quickly stopped making the piles of shells, in turn for trying to play with my cat.

I have had one for about 9 months and it is extremely shy. Most of the time he just sits in his cave and watches me. He also is a very poor feeder I have to work really hard and put a lot of food in the tank multiple times a day just to keep him alive. Still he seems to be losing weight slowly but surely. This may not be the norm though. I bought him from an LFS that uses higher levels of copper and he was in that tank for close to a year. I think he is blind because of it. He usually misses food on the rare occasions that he tries to eat and I see him bump into rocks once in a while. He is not extremely skinny just not fat like the rest of my fish. I am pretty bumbed out because I am sure at some point I will have to euthanize him. Better than starving to death I guess. :(

my 5in female lives in a 100gal tank that shares water with the system, located in the filter room in my basement under the display tank thats upstairs.
i had her for over a year now, shy when you first come in but then she comes out of her cave, she flares up her fins to try to scear me off all the time, she will kill anything thing you put in. feeds on goldfish, clams, krill.
moves sand, shells, small rock all over the tank.
cool fish, great colors, and what a adatude.

I couldn't agree more, except mine hides 99% of the time. I went away for 2 weeks and when I came back the lady looking after it had not seen it once and thought I was having a joke with her, making her feed an empty tank!

He is simply the most boring fish EVER in history!

Lovely looking, but only if I stand by the door about 10 feet away from the tank, because he NEVER comes out, only to pick up a shrimp of something else to eat, and then, only after you have walked away!

Any trigger would be :)

My undy rarely hides during the day now. I've had her since '02 (maybe even earlier, memory is kinda fuzzy) and she was only shy for about the first month. She has plenty of rockwork, and spends most of her day digging, moving hermits around, and biting/moving pieces of liverock and filtration. She eats like a pig too, and has never skipped a meal. Best fish (and maybe pet) I've ever owned. I'll always keep a tank dedicated to one.
