University of Florida: Banggai Cardinalfish

UF_Card - I honestly think you might get a better response if you gave us some info on what you want them for, the direction of the "reseach" and the probable/ desired outcome. I have them and I'm sure others do too, but nobody is going to hand over the fish they sweat blood over with so little info. JMO

UF_Cardinalfish,

Sorry but I don´t see a point... If no one is willing to sell through the forum without informaion on research and there may be ones selling it through PM, why not PM the interested breeders ?

Also try

Sorry if I´m sounding troublesome, it´s not my intention... just don´t thinking bumping this will lead anywhere.
Anderson.

I had some PM dealings with UF_Card, they are looking for a deal offering much less than a breeder can get locally. Makes no sense to me, doesn't funded research pay like $1000 for toilet seats and $100 for hammers??? Not trying to be a pain but it sounded "fishy" to me. I forget the exact numbers but I remember him wanting to pay what I figured would be a reasonable wholesale price if you were producing 1000's and desperate to move them. I'm not questioning the validity of the request, just don't understand the lowballing. If they want CB bangaii for research and are funded why dicker over price????

Not all research grants work like that. Frankly, fisheries grants are just the opposite making you beg, borrow and steal to get a plain old #2 pencil. My MS work was "funded", but I had to borrow all my tanks and retrofit them to what I needed with stuff that was laying around in storage, plus rig up a makeshift mass phyto growing setup. Then I still had pay for some things out of pocket becuase the grant money only covered analytical stuff that was central to the research. Don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining nor am I defending a fishy offer, just trying to dispell some mistruths about science and grants. Take a stroll around the Biology (fisheries or marine bio) parking lot at any school. You'll be hard pressed to see fancy/expensive cars as you might find in say the business school lot!

BTW-Here's a bit more about what UF_Cardinalfish is looking at:

OK, I stand corrected. Guess I always thought you research folks had cushy jobs with unlimited resources :D What you say makes sense though.

LOL! far from a "cushy" job, but when you love what you do, that more than makes up for the difference:P

Heh, I work with a bunch of researchers at my workplace. Far from cushy for them. And they are CHEAP as far as spending money to build their labs and research apparatus. They are one scary bunch of ghetto DIY'ers too :) Guess that's job security for me :)

David- good thing you don't ask me what I do for a living.
Cushy is how I describe my work environment, but not my lab resources. Believe me for an academic scientist I'm well funded-but that means very little except on paper. However my fish collegues seem to have a different level of funding. Its important research, and until all our money stops going overseas, the govt has become less and less willing to hand out research grants, yet the research has to continue. So beg borrow & steal-oops I mean midnight shopping, has become the norm
AS for golden toilet seats, that the military contracts and NASA, both of which for some reason that escapes me recieve far disproportionates amounts of the govts budget. I digress

Still I have little sympathy, at least you get something :D Try this as a humble "garage breeder" / hobbyist and see how inventive you can get

It's all good though, you guys figure out what to do and us poor slobs in the trenches will grunt it out and actually do it :smokin:
