Unknown disease in Hippo Tang

Hi everyone,

I'm hoping to get some assistance in diagnosing the disease my Hippo Tang has. Let me explain my situation. I bought a 130 gallon tank about 6 months ago when my Blue Hippo Tang got to be about 2.5" in the 29 gallon tank (also had a Clown fish in it). The tank cycled for 2 months with 150 pounds of live sand and 30 pounds of cured live rock. The first fish into the main tank was a yellow tang I bought and put in a 10 gal quarantine tank for just over a month. The yellow tang did wonderful. Next in was my 8 year old Clown fish 6 weeks later which also did well. I finally gathered the courage to move my favorite (the Hippo Tang) into the tank 2 weeks ago.

The first week, the tang did nothing but hide. She and the Yellow tang did not get along for a few days. 2 days ago I noticed little white spots that looked like salt on her (maybe 12-15 of them). I thought it was classic Ich so I removed her to a 44 gallon rubbermaid container (the dark walls keep her much calmer than a clear tank without the need for a buddy) for quarantine and to start Kordon Rid Ich (formalin and malachite green).

Yesterday, the spots looked like they had flattened so I figured the parasites had fallen off. Today, she looks like a different fish! The spots are gone completely and in their place is a white film. Her eyes are also slightly cloudy, she's lethargic, can hardly swim, is gasping (despite extra aeration), and mostly lays at the bottom of the quarantine container. I used water from the main tank for quarantine. I've included a picture of her (I had to move her to a clear container to get a decent picture). I'm sure she's going to die shortly and it breaks my heart! I was wondering if anyone had any ideas of what she might have, if it's contagious to my other fish, if I should continue treatment and what could have caused it. This isn't stress from me moving her is it? I don't know what to do for her or my other fish. Please help!

Dory died.

Dory died.

My Blue Hippo tang died a few hours after posting my original message last night. :sad2: Could treating her with Rid Ich have caused her symptoms? It said it was pretty safe for sensitive fish, but now i have a dead fish on my hands. Ideas? Has anyone had this before?

I had the same thing happen to me a little while ago in my 10g and there seems to be a lot of others lately with the same symptoms. So far, nobody seems to have an answer.

Crypt could have damaged the gills, possibly leaving it in a weakened state. It also could have been an overdose of formalin, or it could have been brook, it's really hard to say....at this point I would think about QT'ing the remaining fish.
