Well i'm sure some of you may read my post regarding the first half of my TBS package.

http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=299015

I was a little disappointed not to get any huge monster Mantis shrimp (or any at all) or a ton of gross gorilla crabs, or any pgymy octos, etc. But overall the 1st half wasn't bad. It wasn't up to the high level of critters I had envisioned from other people's posts, but I did get alot of critters including:

small pink urchin
black snail with bright red foot
small gorilla crab, quarter sized
red "emerald" crab- 1/2"
baby porcelin crab- < 1/4", like the size of a "Nerd" candy
red pistol shrimp 3/4"
lots of tiny Cerinth snails 1/4" long
a dozen small white-ish lancelets
dozen serpent/brittle stars, well i'm only quessing b/c i can only see a tentacle or two from various holes.

However I still have to say that TBS LR is 100x better than any store bought LR from my LFS. The rock is covered with sponges, bi-valves, cup corals, barnacles, etc.

I'm looking forward to my second half in about two hours, and i'll post pics of it when i get it in the tank.

I hope i get some monster mantis and gorilaa crabs....wish me luck.

Ok after a rough trip to the airport, 25 miles in 1.5 hours.....in the rain and heavy traffic, I got my 2nd half of my TBS shipment.

This time I got:

probably 50 "bad" crabs....at least that is how many i pulled of the rocks and holes, i'm sure there are more still. These are sitting in a holding tank awaiting to become trigger or octopus food...lol.

I got 5 pistol shrimp, this brings me to probably 8 pistol shrimp in my 40 gal reef tank, wow this is one NOISY tank.

6 Porcelin crabs, including one that was 2" in diameter

3 "red" emerald crabs, these have been left in the tank until they start causing trouble.

I also saw two clearish/greenish shrimp, which maybe be baby pepermint or some other kind of reef shrimp, not mantis or pistol.

In addition to the Turbo/Astrae snails included with the package, I got probably 25 other nails, they kinda look like nassarius or whelk snails, a couple have bright red feet like the one in my first shipment.

Sounds like you have the makings of a little shrimp calypso band. :beachbum:

Also sounds like enough crabs for a crab cake. Pictures if you can please.

mmmm, serving crabcakes with calypso music.... I acutally have two more pistol shrimp in another tank at my house on the pennisula, when i combine the two tanks, i'll probably have 10+ pistol shrimp....lol

I hope they don't end up killing each other.

Too bad I didn't get any hitch-hiker octos or any large mantis shrimp.

Yeh, that would have had potential.

Sounds like you got the brunt of the storm yesterday. We've had about 3" of rain and more than enough wind up here in Butte Co. but the radar showed the heart of the storm over the bay area. Glad you made the trip safely.

I didn't get any large mantis in my first delivery. 2nd delivery was from a different source. The rock looked kind of blue and not nearly as many sponges but the ones I got were nice . I got three large mantis in one rock and several small mantis. I am not sure if they are babies or a different variety. There must be some pistol shrimp too. My 125 sounds like it is filled with rice crispies :) .

Still trying to sort out the good from bad crabs. Definitely found out the ones with black tipped claws are deadly. All my undesirables are in a thirty long until I sort them out.

Hey Dex, quick question. When you say the 2nd delivery was from a different source what do you mean?
Thanks

I saw my first mantis in my TBS second shipment today. He was playing bongos on one of my turbo snails in the full 660W light of day. I fed him some shrimp as an alternative.

I'll try to catch him this weekend. As bold as he is I think I have a good shot.

If you are interested I'll ship you mine if you'll cover the shipping cost. Otherwise I'll see if the LFS will trade for him.

reefrob,

how large and what color is your mantis?

got pics?

thanks,

"how large and what color is your mantis?"

Simple enough questions. Not so simple answers: I'd say it is green but I'm horribly color blind. I'll ask my wife tonight (if you think that is funny you should see the look on a 3 year old's face when they figure out an adult hasn't learned his colors yet.)

He doesn't appear to be the ornate peacock type but I'll take some pics of his next appearance. I think he is about 2 inches long. He does have personality. He peeks from one hole slowly emerging then dives to a second hole a few inches away then repeats the process.

If you'll PM me your e-mail address I'll send you some pics. I can't post here with the wimpy size limit.
