UPDATE of your ONYX clowns

whats interesting is why there are so few breeders of onyx out there. i would be very interested if i could find another breeder like rod.

There are a few breeders now if you look in the breeders forum... I dont know if any of them have any available.....

I would buy from Rod if you can.. His clowns have exceptional color... Plus Rod is a old timer like me.

I think one of the reasons you dont see a ton of people with them yet is they seem to take along time to mature... I think in the future there will be alot more... Anytime there can be profit on a fish someone will try and fill the void... If ora comes to the market the prices will drop through the floor...

I dont know if any of you have looked at the ora web site lately but they have a few new types of clowns comming to market that look really weird but cool.... Some more genetic defects maybe?

After 6 months they layed there first batch.
Here are a few new pics.
After reading all of this thread im not even sure if they are still "onyx".
Maybe i'll name the babies "bengal clowns". Who Dey

the positive thing about buying from LA is if you can overcome the brooke,/internal parasites, etc, than you have a good pair of onyx that will potentially breed alot faster than w/ other options. were they that fat when you got them? lol it seems they are very healthy and BIG!

was the size of the two differentiated when you recd them?

thats my UK pair......just stripped my reef and setting these two up in a 2x2x3tall just for them (with a RBTA) hope to breed soon after!

very very nice. keep us posted.

if your perc has alot of black on it, and you want to call it onyx, great. some onyx will have the black dorsal and some will not. i personally prefer the black dorsal. ive seen some very nice onxy from LA as well as other sources. as long as you like your clownfish, thats all it matters.

Thought i post a picture of my pair of Onyx. I got them from a fellow reefer who broke down his tank. I got them when they were babies pretty much..Now the black is connecting so, im pretty excited, they turned out to look perfect..IMO

Thanks Embryo!..Well, They eat twice a day.. I feed them a mix i make of formula foods, brine, mysis and other good stuff and flakes as a snack in the evenings..but the first meal is very meaty and very hearty, the flakes are only a small snack before the lights go out..

sounds good, thats pretty much my scheme also. seems to be working very well for you.

thank you again for posting pics. there beautiful

Thanks..Yeah, they are fat and happy.. I also have a pair of Black & White ocellaris (Im a clown junkie) living in my sump..im still trying to figure out what to do with them, they are beautiful aswell..

Ive also been researching about the ever elusive "ORA Picasso clowns"..last i heard was they were coming out as regular percs, unless they develop the "picasso-ness" later in time..Anyways, dont want to hijack the thread..

But yeah, These Onyx are by far my favorite fish..everybody seems to have very cool looking pairs..although, what do you think the Onyx standard would be?..meaning, the perfect onyx to compare the rest to..

well personally i think the perfect onyx is one with full black body but an unusual white pattern. similar to the ora onyx/picasso. on there site. body shape i think is important also. i like a clown with a very heavy thick high-hump body.

I know this has been debated before, but i think a "real" onyx should be one to have a black top fin..or mixed..not orange..To me one with an orange top fin is a regular perc..If you can see from my pics..the male to me looks like a perfect onyx specimen..the fin is half black, half white..JMO

ireef, as much as i agree that i personally like having the black dorsal. number one priority is black body. and your male, i would not consider it full onyx yet. even though its nice and prob will dev. black btwn 2/3 rd bar.

Ooops, sorry..I meant a black dorsal fin..Mine has half black, half white..(top fin, LOL..) sorry, couldnt remember the word dorsal..LOL
