Update on my sumpless, skimmerless, and softy dominated 40Br tank

Electrobes

Montipora type guy
Let's start this with the tank's make-up, goals, and finally some pictures!

Main Tank: Aqueon 40Br

Reef Nook: I have a Harry Potter room right behind the tank. In there I have a curtain separating the back of the room with my maintenance equipment, and the front of the room which is newly painted and with a nice bathroom cabinet that houses the electronics.

Rock and Sand: Aragolite rock (Reef on the Rocks) + Plus some choice rock from a previous tank to that was used to seed the Aragolite, Carib-Sea sand (About 40 lbs for a shallow bed)

Filtration: Converted H.O.B. skimmer (Octopus BH-100F) to H.O.B. sump, Phosban Reactor running Phospure and Black Diamond

Lighting: 4 X 24W T5's (2 X Aqua Blue Special (12K) and 2 X 454nm (Actinics))

Circulation: Vortech MP10 set on Long pulse mode (Purple)

Temperature Control: Dual Ranco with 2 X 75watt heaters and 1 X 6inch vent fan

Other:
DIY battery backup for Vortech (Lasts about 72+ hours)
ATO using Aqualifter and RO/DI water
pH Controller: Milwaukee SMS122 (Just use it as a monitor)
DIY Moonlights (4 X Blue LEDs)

Maintenance (These are approximate durations)

Daily: Dose BRS two part: 30mL Calcium in the morning and 30mL Alkalinity at night, feed Spectrum pellets to fish

Weekly: 5G water change using Reef Crystals set at 1.026, sand stirring during water change, dose 30mL Magnesium, dose a drop of iodine (Currently to help a healing coral that fragged itself).

Monthly: Change out carbon and Phospure (1/2 cup carbon and 3 tbs Phospure), razor tank, vinegar overflow box and Vortech as needed.

Every Two Months: Take out and clean H.O.B. sump

Every Six-Eight Months: Replace T5 bulbs (One month at a time)

Goals/Changes

- I am having a replacement overflow made by a friend so it can have a small pump in it to create a better suction into the H.O.B. sump. Right now my water surface is disgusting and basically unmoving. This should fix that well.

- I am still working on leeching out the phosphates from two rocks that I received. The reason why I have them is because I wanted the corals on those rocks. Thus far it's going well albeit slower than I want. The good news is that in the months it's been in my tank my Aragolite and seed rock refuse to grow it. Eventually the rocks will have nothing more to leech and I won't have two hairy rocks to see!

- I've begun a new maintenance routine, I stir the sand little by little during water changes. I am also picking up old shells off the sand bed so it can be immaculate. I love a nice clean sand bed, free of debris!

I like this plain simple design. The tank looks kind of healthy too. Why dont you install a big Eheim canister filter to help with surface skimming?

Greech - Thanks! I was just looking at your tank, I can't help but check on other 40Br's when I am on RC! First of all I love your rockscape, I must've stolen yours or great minds think alike!! ;) Second I love just how clean everything in your tank is, I know that takes a lot of work. I am looking forward to seeing your tank as time progresses, those corals are awesome! :D

Zaheda - Thanks, I hope this tank looks healthy.. I'd be one sad panda otherwise! The reason why I haven't employed the use of a canister filter is because I am trying to remain as K.I.S.S. as possible. Going with a new overflow box to fit both the sump intake and a small pump will 1) Give me the surface tension I want 2) Won't be as visible as a canister filter 3) Won't be as noisy as a canister filter and 4) Uses less power than one as well. :)

very nice! similar to my setup (sumpless, everything is HOB, though it does have a skimmer and MH). its good to know that Im not the only one doing a sump-less reef!

what/how many fish do you have in their? I see a lonely clown... anything else?

Thanks! I have a pair of false percs, a six-line wrasse, and a flame blenny (Instead of an orange tail these guys have a bright yellow one).

Mo' pics!

Mo' pics!

Things are looking better! After instituting the combo of waterchange and sand cleaning yesterday, and razoring the tank, I took some shots today to show the results. I am happy to report that the tank is looking better than ever and the only draw back from messing with the sand bed is the expected dusting on the right side of the tank.

On to the pics!

hi electrobes,

glad to see you give an update and your tank looks great man.

did you always have an issue with the surface scum?

i notice now you have an mp pump which i hear are top notch, but the 1 limitation i see from them is that you can't angle them.

do you think nothing breaking the surface is the issue?

thanks again for your tank update. always enjoyed the learning.

Thanks Steelerfan1! Ever since going sumpless I have always had an issue with the water surface being stagnant. Before I moved to my new home, I tried to make it go aqay by adding a Maxijet and pointing it straight up. It wasn't perfect, nor did it completely agitate the surface, but at least some gas exchange was going on.

While I can't angle the MP10, I still refuse to go with any other pump. The amount of flow I actually get without creating a major laser beam of flow is awesome. I honestly don't believe I need to angle it to achieve what I needed. It does take a little more work finding the right spot, but once there you're set.

I know my not agitating the water surface is a problem, but to be honest I have no idea just how big of an issue it is. Some gas exchange is going on because of the HOB sump dumping back into the tank. If anything I think I am getting robbed of some PAR from my T5's because the surface scum can get bad quickly. I hope I don't light shock the corals! ;)

thanks a lot for your help bud.

i may do the old school just take a paper towel in a net if/when the time comes for my tank, but will be following along on yours, for sure.

BTW, your new home is looking very nice from the pics.

CONGRATS!

Thanks again! Man I tried the paper towel trick and it works very well, but I've found that I had to do it all the time... I just couldn't keep up!

well, me not having any water in my tank probably won't mind the maint. for a while :-)

planned on doing the papertowel thing and use a magfloat daily for a couple minutes will go a long way.

please continue to update the thread bud, as again, really enjoy tagging along.
