I'm thinking of transferring my m. doreensis and saddleback clowns from their current 40-gallon home to a new 185 gallon tank that I'm setting up, and am wondering about lighting.

The tank it's in now is lit by a DIY LED fixture. The lights are about 12" from the water, and the tank is 15" deep. The LTA is expanded and happy under these lights. Flow is limited to the return from a Mag 9.5, split with help of a SCWD.

I've been planning to utilize a similar LED setup on the new tank, but it's 30" deep, and I am worried about the LTA getting enough light way down on the sand bed. I have a pair of DE HQI 250-watt MH lights from an old setup that I could use. If I go that route, I will want to run the MH lights on very short cycles to minimize energy demand and heat (which is why I switched to LEDs to begin with).

What do you guys think?

from what Ive heard u could also run LEDs for ur new setup since they have been compared to MH.. Just use some combination of them, some 30w LEDs should be enough in combination with some other smaller, with 14000k, 420nm, or some white light, or ur color of preference but they should work!

Im not an expert so maybe wait til someone else gives an answer but they should work just use the correct ones and enough watts.
