upgrade

hey guys,

im looking to upgrade to a 180g acrylic in the next couple of months. can anyone recommend a good place to make a purchase?

If you don't mind a drive, Exotic is re-opening in Sac on the 26th. They have great prices on tanks.

Rommel you might as well just go to World Marine, all of Exotics tanks are being made by them and I am pretty sure that most of the tanks they will end up selling will be from them as well.

thanks all. Warren, where is world marine located and hows the prices? also, i wanted to go halides this time around, would i be better off going with glass instead of acrylic?

Unless setup badly, or you have massive MH, MH will not do any harm to acrylic. So you dont have to get glasss just because of MHs.

MH would make the tank brittle, but that doesn't occur till long long time.

If you are going MH get heavy-duty eurobracing (perimeter bracing with no cross braces). That way you have full flexibility on where to hang your MHs. My tank has the cross brace in the middle so my 400w MHs caused "issues" and I am forever having to clean the cross brace so the light isn't blocked.

Any idea how long is a long time? im debating because a friend of mine had an acrylic and it started to warp on top from the halides.....at least thats what was said. i just want to make sure so i dont have to upgrade for many years.

GK, i was actually planning on getting the euro bracing style for the same reason of lighting issues and ease of aquascaping.

what thickness is best to reduce bowing?

also, how much lighting should i go with? i would like to keep a few sps this time around. would 2 400w be enough?

What strenght lights depends on tank depth. 30" or deeper to the bottom (top of sand, if you have sand) and you should think 400W. Below that, 250W unless you have a really shallow tank. For spacing, one light about every 2 feet works well for coverage (starting about one foot from the edge).

So, originally I had 3 400W pendants, now I have 4 250W in two lighting "units" (that also include t5 fluorescents) (my tank is 8' long, 30" deep to the sand). I switched because we are planning less sps so I don't need full-bright all the way to the bottom.
