I should first start out with introducing myself. Name is Mike, and live in Rochester NY, Married with 1 boy (3years old) and another on the way in 2 months... (in money saving mode for daycare...)
I have a 90 gallon Reef tank that I have had up for 7 years now... have been though some fun times and gotten past them all.... Aptasia outbreak, Flatworm infestation, Flood to the point of almost no salt left in the tank... and yet I am still here... An opportunity came to me to get a free 180 gallon reef ready tank with stand and sump... Not a hard decision... Very Excited... Which brings me back to the top part (2 kids in daycare.... for those that don’t know that = $2000 a month... Not so fun...)
So limited budget at the start of this project... however still going forward :spin2:
I have on my 90 Gallon 2 175watt Metal Halides and 2 48" actinic lights in a hood that I built. So I have 2 options here as I see it. When I get the 180 up I can sell it as a (somewhat complete system) or I can Rob from it as I need. have been looking into LED lighting and would like some input if possible. It would be around $600 - $800 from what I am seeing for LED lighting DIY with CREE LEDS and all that good stuff. Things I dont know is does the light spectrum change over time like VHO and Halides? If not then LED seems the way to go...
That being said the other question I have about LED is you have strings of LEDs, if one goes out, what happens if one of the LEDs goes out in that string? the entire string go out like Christmas lights? or just the LED?
The reason for going LED is that the Tank will be going in my finished basment where I spend most of my time... I don’t want the added heat in that room since the ceiling is not as tall as a normal room... (Also they the idea sounds awesome... LEDs last longer to)
My other thoughts are to use the ASM G2 from my 90 and also introduce an Algae Scrubber... Have read good things with them and making one with a 5 gallon bucket seems very simple to try...
In the planning stage so by all means your thoughts are appreciated...
Also I am planning on having the sump in the unfinished part of the basement about 8 feet away... right there next to where the sump will be is sewer access and drains in the floor for all my oopses...
