My story

Hi all,

I know its probably been asked a lot but i have had odd problems with power at home yesterday and if my wife hadnt been home im almost sure it could have been a bad day

Power triped and all power to sockets turned off......basically after unplugging everything and turning them back on the wife said one of the fish tank extension leads was to blame because she plugged it in twice and this tripped the house again!

She left it as i was already on my way home and i plugged all in and guess what.....NOTHING!!! all ok....

Also this stuff has been running a 1.5-2years

I am now thinking of a UPS back up or similar that can be fitted in line so if this happens again it wil automatically take over

any one know of such a device or use one?
Cost?

Thanks

rooshi

It would need to be a pretty big UPS to support what you want to do. A UPS in computer centers are designed primarily to allow for a controlled shutdown of the servers if the power if off for a few minutes and to protect them from momentary cuts, but not to run them.

If you have a printer (laser) and try to run it on a UPS the battery will not support it (regular Staples/Best Buy version UPS).

Sounds like a "load" issue on the one lead to the outlet. 15 amps is the rated outlet spec, but so is everything else on the same line to the circuit if the outlets are all wired to the same circuit (most are). If you have your tank running, TV, DVD, and toss in a box fax, and a vacuum, it may trip the circuit. You need to check this balance to ensure that run of outlets has under the 15 amp total draw on it. If it does have less, it could be a strip on the tank telling you it is getting to hot and needs to be replaced. If it "cooled down" when the wife left it off, and it worked later, that is another thing it is trying to tell you something.

Thanks for the reply. I will have to check the load on that power strip. Funny thing is nothing has changed in a while and all things that are on the strip have been on that strip for months.

Is it worth while reducing the load on the strip anyway and also replacing the strip?

rooshi,

i have my tunze's ( powerheads ) on an APC 1400 UPS it will run the pumps for about 8 hours incase of a power failure.. i also have an APC 700 Ready as a backup to that.. i can plug 1 tunze into it after the 1400 dies.. it will power 1 tunze for about another 8 hours...

somthing is always better than nothing... several years ago my area had a 16 hour power outage needless to say i lost almost all my fish.. fish i had for years...

good luck !

Joe
