OH! The anemone was doing the same thing... it looked gorgeous and 2.5 hours after the lights were on she is all closed up spitting something that looks like digested brine shrimp balls connected with strings. What's going on? Is she dying? That's how they die? They spit stuff for 5 min then they look good then they do the same thing every day? At the same time? Then they look god again and so on? Is she eating during night? Is it being overfed during night with something? Because I didn't feed the tank at all last night....???

Your bta is most likely spitting up zooxenthellae because it still is not receiving enough light. Please do not buy one of the cheap led fixtures mentioned above. Take sugar magnolias advice and buy quality. You definitely get what you pay for in this hobby. In my opinion you should look to get rid of the bta until your tanks ready. Btas are considered one of the hardiest of host anemones but if it's needs are not met they will perish just the same. Lastly, you never mentioned how long your tank has been running? I'm guessing it's a rather new setup...

You quoted him talking about buying an Orbit Current LED light system and said it isnt enough lighting..
the orbit light system works great
This is my RBTA whom i bought at the size of a quarter and 8 months later he is doing very well so maybe im reading you wrong and you were talking about his original lighting which i agree is to weak. but orbit current makes a great light for BTAs.

Which Orbit system do you have on your 75g? I was thinking for my 40g tank which is 30" long to purchase http://www.petsandponds.com/en/aquarium-supplies/c5813/c231289/p17715169.html

I don't think you'll get this sorted in time for the nem, take him back to the store where he'll have a chance at least, and when he dies he won't nuke your tank. I don't think you should've gotten it in the first place cause your tank isn't set up for it and is too young to be stable enough, and you haven't really studied up on them enough to care for it. Try again after a few months when you can get everything in place beforehand.

That said, I disagree that a $500 light is necessary for a bta.

PS that light doesn't dim, and only has blue and whites standard (idk how much more $ to "customize"). I wouldn't get it

I have the 48"-60" light. I have it set to run 12 hours a day. It has a sunrise and sunset option which I also run and you can change the intensity on it which I like also.

I completely disagree with the 3watts per gallon rule when it comes to this particular light. Ive had alot of success with this RBTA. I got him extremely bleached and unhealthy and he has turned around and has grown so much over the last 8+ months using the current orbit lighting.

Thank you. My tank is 30" long, that means I will have to buy the other fixture which is 24"-36" and that might have not enough light to sustain the anemone and the corals...

I had the anemone in a 30" tank before I upgraded to the 75 gallon. So I was using the 24"-36" current orbit led light for that tank and the RBTA was doing awesome in it also

How about this one? http://www.ebay.com/itm/Dimmable-UV...m-Grow-Plant-Coral-Reef-Fixture-/131003126108

Why not look used for a couple of Aqua Illumination Blues, they should run a couple of hundred each with a controller. Quality is there and should last you much longer than an EBAY light.

Tank rail kit is only 29.99 or something.

Thanks a lot for pointing me to the right direction.

That's not anywhere near enough light to support a BTA. If you purchase an animal that requires very strong lighting then you need to be able to afford to provide the lighting it needs. If not I'd suggest returning the BTA before it dies, which is likely given the lighting you currently have.

FWIW, I just switched to LED's from 6x39w T5 lighting with a LTA in my tank. I'm running 180w 15k LED's over my 40 gallon tank.

I commend your enthusiasm to pay over $500 out of love for your marine animals. I wouldn't make affirmations as "you should be able to afford" unless you pay my bills and deal with my real life.
The 300W fixture from MarsAqua actually has better PAR readings than your Maxspect Razor and people had great success with it. Of course it's not slim, lightweight and fancy looking as a Razor but for $340 less it's well worth it.
I also returned the BTA to the store the very same day I posted this, it was fine for a week then it died. I strongly believe that my lighting was not the problem. That being said, I am not a bad person and my intent was not to kill a beautiful creature, if I made a mistake I surely learned from it and I am also sure I am not the first or the last one in this hobby making such mistakes, I came here and I posted with hope and in good faith I will receive a thoughtful academic answer, not a judgmental one...

Thank you! That helped me a lot in my "aquarium light" journey. Actually, after PAR values were measured and the fixture was up and running (with the help of my gorgeous and understanding wife) we really like the look and feel of it.
I am finishing the canopy today but other than that I have to admit it's awesome... million thanks for helping me through this. The lights are very bright and they need to be dimmed at about 75% even for SPS.

EBAY lights are not all bad, used AI most likely are bad.
One can chose the myriad of controlling options on a light fixture, go for design, weight or other aspects, but when it comes down to light and the PAR values are almost the same if not better and you don't need fancy controllers, why to overpay?
