Using a wireless gaming adapter to talk to your home router

Has anyone set up their ACIII or Pro with a wireless gaming controller in order to talk to their wireless router...specifically if anyone has a 2Wire At&t UVERSE router?

Which GA are you using; I have both versions of the LinkSys GA(s); older and newer so I might be able to help? The router shouldn't matter except when you go to connect via the internet. Internal network should be close to the same for any router.

Most GA's dont support any security other than WEP.
I got rid of mine because of that....I use the buffalo ethernet adaptor now and it is awesome.

My newer LinkSys (WGA600N) supports WEP and WPA but you are correct; my older LinkSys was only WEP.

I thought that I read you cannot get the Buffalo adapters any more (something about a court injunction)????

I just set up mine last night with the linksys wireless-n Gaming adapter (WGA600N) and use AT&T Uverse. I can see everything fine while inside the firewall but am having troubles accessing from outside. Need to work on it some more.. the AT&T RG doesn't make it easy.

if you have it working inside then you are likely just a port forward and dyndns account away from internet access.

A few suggestions to keep your AC from getting hacked:

* Change the http port used to access the controller; leaving it at port 80 is easy to detect and a few people here have been hacked

* Change password routinely; username and passwords are send in clear text

The Uverse RG doesn't have a traditional port forwarding interface. they do what they call "pin-holes". When i had cable internet access and using my own router i did not have any problems with the setup (took me a whole 15 mins).

I have a Linksys WRT54GS running in client bridge mode, serving the same purpose as a gaming adapter. Client bridge mode is not available on the default Linksys firmware, but I was able to use a third party firmware from dd-wrt.com, to allow client bridge mode. The WRT54GS is cheaper that most game adapters, and does support WPA and WPA2.

Solved my problem the RG doesn't support loop back! who would have thought that! So gmatamis i have it networked using the game adapter and AT&T uverse and everything is working great.

I''ve used modded firmware from http://www.dd-wrt.com for my linksys router enabling the to act as a repeater/bridge for my DirectvVOD, Xbox Live, servicing desktops, etc without WLAN. Works quite well and cheaper. Flashing the router can be tricky though...

ACIII wireless set-up with At&t 2Wire

ACIII wireless set-up with At&t 2Wire

Hello Tokomi,

Thanks for all the info. Can you confirm a couple of things...what model 2Wire router do you have with At&t? Also, what do you mean it does not support loopback?

I currently have a Aqucontroller Jr. (for 3.5 years now) and wanted to upgrade to a ACIII or pro but want to be able to monitor my PH and temp through the internet. I use to have my own router with Netgear but since switching to At&t Uverse I heard that it would be difficult to have anything communicate through it wirelessly.

Are you able to monitor your parameters by going online with the set-up you have now? If so, I will buy the same gaming adapter as you have (assuming you have the same 2Wire router)?

Thanks again for all your help.

gmatamis,

My 2wire RG model is 3800HGV. What i mean by does not support loop back is that if you are on your network you can not access the AquaController by going to the public IP address. You must use the internal IP address.

If you wanted to have loop back. you would have to put your personal router on the DMZ then connect the aquacontroller to it. Your personal router would then do all the port forwarding. That is if your personal router supports loop back which most newer models do.

Hope this helps.

Hello Tokomi,

Thanks for all the help....!

As far as a gaming router or glink device what model do you recommend? Do you recommend the gaming router that you are using?

As I mentioned in my previous post, I would like to monitor my parameters via the internet when I am not at home. I have the exact same 2Wire model that you have so I am assuming your set-up should work for mine...unless you have any suggestions to make any changes.

I will be buying the ACIII and router at the same time and that is why I wanted to do the research on the compatibility of them. You have been a great help......

By the way, how long did it take you to set everything up and working properly?

Thanks again.

The model that i am using works great it was easy to set up and haven't had any issues once i figured out the loop back issue. Not saying that you couldn't go with a cheaper model and it would work just as well. it should only take maybe 30 minutes to get everything set up properly if you know what your doing and the RG takes about 10 min to reboot.

When you get everything, if you need help send me a PM.

Hi gmatamis,
Recently I had to replace my wireless-G system that had been in use for about 4 years (and worked quite well) with a new system because lightning got my router. My old system was all D-link except the Linksys wireless bridge that tied my ACIII to my d-link router. With this sytem, all worked well overall, but every once in a while, I got "Aquacontroller not responding". I think my signal was the issue.

About 6 weeks ago, I replaced my whole network with Wireless-N.
Router = DLink DIR-655 (main computer is wired to this via ethernet cable.

Wireless Bridge (Gaming Adapter) = Linksys WGA600N

Notebook adapter = DLink DWA-652 .

This combination has worked flawlessly so far. I also got the ANT24-0230 and replaced the 3 small antennae on the router with it. The increased range and reliability has meant that I have gotten NO 'Aquacontroller not responding" messages yet. Aquanotes runs 24/7 on this system.

This combination has worked extremely well for me. It took about a day and a half to set up because I rerouted some of the wiring in my office for a cleaner look, but setting up the parameters/IP's etc. only took an hour or so.

Hope this helps.

Hello gman,

Thanks for the info. It looks like I will be going with the Linksys WGA600N gaming router since you and Tokomi have had good success with it. The primary concern I had was whether it was going to be compatible with my At&t 2Wire router and it looks like Tokomi has been able to make it work successfully.

Since you have success with the same gaming router (even though you have a different home router), it seems that this router is very compatible.

Any way, thanks for the advice. I will be setting up the ACIII sometime in the beginning of November.

Thanks again.
