Using Copper - What to take out of filter?

All,
I have read to take out carbon bc that will just suck up all the copper. I am running an eheim ecco can filter with the substrate (little brown balls) that it came with. is that ok? I took out my purigen in case that wold not allow the copper to work.

Additionally i have taken out all my live rock and put it in a tub with a powerhead. Is it ok to keep the top on the tub? would it need to be open for any reason? fresh air etc? i left the top cracked in case oxygen could be an issue. thanks!! (sorry if this part is off topic):fish1::fish1:

You want to take out anything that will remove copper. Like you stated carbon, purigen, all of those you want to remove. The only thing you want in the tank is PVC pipe for hiding. For the filtration piece you want mechanical and biological filtration and you need to be certain the biological piece is working before adding fish. The biological filtration is what keeps amonnia and nitrite in check both deadly to fish. Sounds to me like you are doing this in your main tank. If that is the case make sure you use cupramine because it is a little easier to remove with cuprisorb and carbon. I orefer using a seperate tank for treatment but if that is not an option you have to make it work. Good Luck....The bucket with the rock is fine. I am sure its not an air tight container so lid on or off air is going to get in....

thanks for the response. It is my main tank and i am using cupramine. I just wanted to be sure that the substrate in my filter was ok to leave in. obviously taking out purigen and or any carbon was done after i read up on this for an hour or so! haha. When it comes time to take out the copper would you do both (curpisorb and carbon)? Should i do 2, 3 water changes after i absorb it all up? any rule of thumb? Also, after all of the ich has dissappeared, how long should i wait until i absorb and begin WC's then add back in LR?

Sorry for all the questions, just want to ensure the fish safety

If you call Seachem they are going to tell you to leave the copper at .5 for 4 weeks. Then you can begin to use the cuprisorb and carbon.

What kind of copper? Cheleted or straight cooper?

Cheleted cooper is designed to be more stable in calcareous environment but is picked up by chemical filtration.

Are you in the middle of QT to maintain copper or finishing QT to rid the QT water of copper?

Many people insist on not using calcareous material or using a cheleted copper to maintain a constant level of copper. I believe there is reason to state that this is the more precise approach, but for myself I do not adhere to this approach of using copper.

I generally prefer to pulse straight copper in a calcareous envirnment. Different stroke. This way is likely inferior technically but comparable overall. Anything that is easy to do will be done more faithfully and thoroughly, and for longer period, it seems. I have done so for over 25 years without any failure.
