Using frozen food

Hi all,

New to the hobby, Set up a 14G biocube about a month ago. I have been feeding my two snowflake clowns a fix of flakes, pellets and frozen food. They are very small and the only inhabitants of the tank right now, so they do not eat near a full cube. What i have been doing is taking some tank water and thawing a cube in a small container, then using a small syringe to feed them some. After i store the thawed food in the refrigerator for a few days and use it until i feel it might not be good anymore (3-4 days).

Is this wrong? Is there a better way to do this besides wasting almost a whole cube every time i feed?

Thanks all!

Wes

Try to carefully cut the cube in half while it is still frozen and just thaw half. It's probably good for more than 3 days though, wait til it smells bad or a lot funkier than it already smells. Lol. I also rinse my frozen food first before feeding it.

A lot of food manufacturers sell frozens by the sheet. This way you can just break off what you need. Or just cut the cubes with a knife and cutting board.

I just toss a whole or partial cube in frozen and let it float. When it floats and defrosts, getting softer, my fish attack it and eat more of it. Whatever works best for you is the best way to do it.

Check out "Reef Frenzy" if you can find it locally, it is sold in sheets. Best frozen food on the market...IMO and you can cut/break the size to your liking :)

+1

I got sick of cutting cubes so I went this route. Although the sheets are pretty big. I've had my sheet for a few months with 5 fish and under halfway gone.

I also use pill containers I keep in the freezer so when I cut my food up I do about a months worth at a time. Also helpful if you need someone to cover feedings

I did the frozen sheet thing with my own frozen food concoction. It's nice to break off exactly what you need and it's already been rinsed. And I incorporated frozen mysis and cyclopeeze in to the mix as well. Doesn't get much easier than that.

This is what we do.....Chop it up in smaller pieces put it in zip lock baggie and lay it flat on freezer top shelf to freeze before it all sticks together again...

Much cheaper this way...and Less of that liquid crap you just need to discard with the cubes....

I agree from my observation that adding frozen food while still frozen doesn't harm anything. My reef lobster is able to sniff out a frozen shrimp (purchased from the grocery store)very fast because it is thawing out in the tank.Seems as if he looses the scent if it's thawed out before I put it in the aquarium.

I make my own food and freeze it on a cookie sheet and cut into little pieces. I don't see why you couldn't thaw what you have and do the same, but I also think what you're doing is just fine too.

When I feed I smoosh a chunk up in front of a powerhead so it gets blown all around. That way the chunk doesn't get sucked into my overflow and the little guys don't have to battle the bigger ones trying to feed of the same chunk.
