Using sand from local beach

I am here in Virginia Beach Va. I was wondering if it would be possible to use the sand from the beach in a tank. The wet sand from the break not the dry sand on the beach. Just wondering if anyone has done this before. If you rinse it and then put it in the tank. Just curios if it can be done.

It can be, but know knowing what you might get with the sand, much safer to buy sand, and if your in this hobby and spending the $ already don't skimp out on stuff that isnt overly expensive ie: sand.

I will give you a thought and leave it at that. Nature has a protein skimmer, it's called waves and tides, it's collection cup is called the beach. AKA all the nastiest of crud is on the beach and in shallow water. Not just natural refuse either but oil and gas and fertalizers ... are you 100% positive you have the time, skills, and cleaners to get it clean? Is it easier to pay a few bucks and be sure?

well raggamuffin you have answered my question for me. Never really thought of it that way. i def don't have the time and skills to clean it.

I did it, but i also cycled with the sand. so i had a chance to most of the worms and little bug's out before stocking. just get your sand at high tide, the beach is mother nature's skimmer and at low tide all the junk and trash is on and in the sand.

You are better off spending the money on the sand then using from the ocean since there can be gas, oil. and other toxins in it that will destroy the tank.

I posted the same question, but i wanted to get the sand from Myrtle beach and once i got down there the sand looked really dirty. so I sayed forget it..
