UV on a SPS tank

Just got my 40w aqua in tonight. I guess we will see. Do a search and you will find all kind of info.

Well I do and I wouldn't run a tank without one.

Advantage: clear water, no fish disease, no coral warfare, keeps aquarium water closer to NSW levels on pathogens, helps to control water borne algae, - then there's the whole organic/phosphate thing but don't ask me it's too much to explain -

Disadvantage: water's too clear, I don't get to order fish remedies, my stinking corals never die so I'm stuck with what I have, I only have to clean my glass about once a month, and my corals grow too dang fast.

but then I'm biased. :)

What size UV would you guys recommend for a 125gallon that is mostly SPS frags with a few LPS and 3 clams? I would like to upgrade the tank someday but don't want to have to buy all new equipment. So what size UV would be good and what brand, I know nothing about UVs.

few LPS and 3 clams?

a UV will burn phyto. Do any of those guys need it?

If not, it depends on the brand, what bulbs they are using, and how the unit is constructed.

I like Emperor and a 40w Emperor unit would be about right.

Well I put this 40w on my 110 sps/sticks, and it's rated for like a 200g tank. The guy I got it from has one more and got it for 120 bucks, it was 6 months old, but not bad considering they are 250 new. Let me know and I'll get you his email addy...

Yep the emperor look like they are built well too.

Ran in conjunction with ozone you won't get cleaner, clearer water...

I assume that uv lighting would also cut down on coralline algae growth as well, is this a safe assumption

chris

I don't think it would stop the growth, but probably would the spread of it...

Bomber do you run your UV lights 24/7 or do you have on a timer or something. And whats the watts on your bulb.

Nope, doesn't seem to have any effect.

I am cycling my tank at the moment using uncured live rock and a great MTC skimmer. The water is a tint yellow. I have a 40watt uv and I am wondering, can I use it to clear up the water a bit or should I just wait it out?

I have 2 uv's in the Rainbow lifeguard setup 24/7. I still have the occasional RTN issue but not often. I have so much coralline growing its unreal. I added new powerheads recently and saw it starting to grow on them in less than a week. So, I would say it does not inhibit coralline growth.

Nick- the UV will not clean that yellow water. You need to do water changes I am afraid. Skimming and filtration will clear some of that but water changes would work best...

Would you recommend UV over ozone if you had to pick one of them?

They work great together really... but if I had to pick one it would be UV.

IMO, I would think a UV sterilizer will actually promote more coralline simply because the total phosphate in your system can be kept much lower since orthophosphate can be sequestered.

Get out of town!

I gave up trying to explain/debate/clarify that, even to the hobby "experts". It seemed like I was the only person that knew that and no one else would even believe it.
