Hi all, I was wondering what UV sterilizer you would recomend for a 180. I'm looking to hang it off the sump. Also where in the sump would you hang it? Also where would get it from? Thanks Tim

I would recommend you get ozone instead...... perosnally I am of te opinion that UV is more of a gimmic than anything else....

I do not think they are a gimmick.... they do help

It's just you need one big enough to do something.

I would say around 80w is what you should go with. Many people go to small & they do pretty much nothing. Ozone is a excellent option & is also cheaper then a really nice UV unit.

i have a life gard 40 watt on my 180 and it cleared an algee bloom in 1 day.they are not a gimmic.they work great and yes you do need to get one big enough and then some for your tank.i believe the 40 watt is rated for over 300 gallons.

Tim, I have an Emperor Aquatics Smart UV model #02040, it has a 40 watt bulb....My 240 is just over 2 months old, I use tap water, and I have almost 0 algae growing in the tank already.....I really think it is solely due to the UV as when I first started the tank cycling, I had a crack in the sleeve of the UV, thus it wasn't working for the 1st 10 days and the brown algae was out of control, as soon as the UV fired up, one good scraping, and the brown algae has gradually decreased to almost nothing....It wasn't cheap, but worth it I think.

Sorry Matt, but I would definately disagree....not a gimmic
