UV Sterilizer-kills bacteria?

UV Sterilizers kill live pathogens including bacteria right? So will one also kill cyanobacteria? Will one end cyano outbreaks?

I don't think that it would end cyano outbreaks, but it would help. If you somehow got all the cyano to go into the sterilizer, it might end, but on the other hand, it is impossible to eliminate all the cyano bacteria. Or very, very unlikely.

Our vishboy is partially right. The cyano we see in our tanks is on surfaces. As long as the surface bacteria don't make it into the water that then passes thru the UV, they live on. UV filters only sterilize the water that passes through them.

I use a UV to protect the clownfish juveniles from pathogens that might culture on the trickle filter. There is something called toxic tank syndrome, that can kill all the juvenile fish. A UV filter is supposed to help. It keeps the water bacteria population down, anyway, without touching the biological filter.

Having some cyano, CCTVReef? How are Mom and Pop Clownfish? Their babies are still growing strong. I'll send pix soon. Just joined photobucket....

Cheers,
K
