I have a large tank- Total volume about 750 gallons.

What are the pros & cons of using UV sterilizer?

I would like to put it outside on my patio, what reccomendations does anyone have?

Thanks
Andy

Are you putting the tank outside?

and cons of uv sterilizer is it will kill of pods and the like,

benefits is it will kill algae off and parasites in the water column, but only if it processes enough water

No the tank is not going outside. I have the chiller outside in an enclosure & I want to put the UV in line with the chiller outside.

Just woundering if the pros out weight the cons with UV. Not sure how much plantonic life the corals take advantage of that will no longer be there with UV.

Good reading, thank you for the link.
Buying the 150watt today.

I think you will be happy. One thing you can also do, if you want to save some money, is order two smaller units that will cover the same water volume. I think UV is the way to go.

Im considering the purchase of a uv but Im wondering what size to get. Do you base it on the total system volume or just the dt volume?

UV is the way to go. I have a 57 watter on my 265 gallon and I still get good pod flow. I set up an Iwaki 40 to run 5 independent 1 inch ball valve, 4 run reactors and one runs the UV. Make sure that if you set it up in line with the chiller you allow the flow to be regulated, too much flow too quickly makes your UV very inefficient to kill parasites.

Definitely from the system volume if you want it to make a noticeable difference, which in your case means a lot bigger of a unit than if you scaled if according to the DT. :spin2:

How do you determine gph per watt?

I was hopeful in thinking I would just need to size it based on the DT but knew in reality that was unrealistic.

The manufacturers typically post what the min/max flow rates are for their own units.
