UV Sterilizer ~ usefull or useless?

I have a problem with Cyno in my tank right now. I've changed all my filters in my RO/DI and have started doing 25% waterchanges weekly to get rid of it. I read there are chemicals to help get it under control but when I called my LFS the dude said those were a waste and I need a UV sterilizer? Will it actually help or is it another piece of equip to eat at my wallet?

Sorry but IMO the guy is wrong. Although UV sterilization will help kill some algae spores it will not be effective against Cyano.
The key with cyano is get rid of the source of nutrients mor probably phosphates and organics.
The following will help:
a) Improved skimming
b) Limit feed amounts (Main source of Phosphates)
c) Increased flow
d) Vaccum it out (Do not baste or blow it as it will spread like fire)
e) Regular water changes (15% to 20% per week while the issue last)
f) Run Ozone
g) Replace light bulbs if they are near one year or older (8 to 9 months for PC and T-5)
h) Run activated carbon and Phosphate removing media 24/7. Using Purigen media also will help.

After your husbandry has been upgraded, if the cyano continue there are two chemicals that will get rid of it:
Chemi-Clean: Very Safe. It works by oxidizing the sludge, nutrients and organics the algae feeds on. If the problem is large and persistent try two applications, if after the second application the cyano still around you will need something a bit more agressive that acts on the cyano directly. For that you use Red Slime Remover. It is a bit more agressive than Chemi Clean but still safe if used as directed and do not overdose.
If you are using chemicals remember to:
a) stop carbon or any other chemical media, turn off Ozone if you have one. You also need to shut off the skimmer or turn off the air to it as the chemical will create a lot of foaming action.
b) After the tratment use twice the usual activated carbon and make a significant water change (20% +)
c) Remember to remove as much Cyano as possible before the treatment to reduce the nutrient release by its demise.
d) Remember that chemical tratments will get rid of it but will only be temporary if your husbandry is not improved.

Finally having said all that if your tank is relatively new wait on the chemicals as it might be part of a normal cycle.

Good Luck!
