I was going through a bag of things that came with the aquarium I bought earlier this year and it has a 10 watt Aquastep UV sterilizer. The tank had been set up as a freshwater tank. Is this something I would need for a saltwater tank?
IMO no. The benefits of UV sterilizers have been debated over and over and the reason most people that use them use them is to keep fish diseases in check. Their ability to do this, especially the small sizes and fast flow rates used on home aquariums, is debatable. I used one on one of my past tanks for a different reason and I noticed no difference when I added it or when I removed except for added heat to the tank.
I have noticed a HUGE difference by adding a UVS to my 380 gallon reef. The water went from pretty clear to not being able to tell there was water in the tank.. this UVS was nearly 500.00 BUT a friend of mine had one on his 265 and had talked me into buying it and I did not regret it at all.. As far as disease I had not had any major outbreaks before adding the UVS but after I added it I never had an outbreak... That doesn't mean it will eliminate the chances of disease.. but it seem to work for me.
IMO, you must try it before you can decide not to use one. Since you already have one I would think you could at least try it out once your tank is established (if it is not already) and see if you can tell a difference.
