Hi , can anyone tell me or know if a UV Sterilizers really work or not worth to invest . If they are worth it what is the TOP of the line and best one to get ? I recently started up a 500 gallon reef tank and want everything for it .

I have a 500 gallon tank with a twin 57 watt system from Vivid aquariums...i can run one or both. I have one on a 90 gallon tank and has worked great.

Thanks for the replies ! What size and brand should I get ? I have a mag 2400 for my return .

500 gallon reef you will need at least a 114 watt uv aqua or emperor both the best on the market .. Would not run off of mag 2400 buy a separate pump ..There is a calculator chart on killing ich you just have to google it on my 300 reef I run a 80 watt using a quiet one pump rated for 296 gallons..Size and flow most 2 important for a uv to work effectively..

That depends on what your expectations are and what you want it to do.

I stopped using my UV. It does help water clarity but in our tanks they are inefficienty to control/stop ich and diseases. As Bent said it really depends on what you expect it to do for you. IMO skip it and spend the money on something else.

I agree. Works great as an aqua clarifier and helps with algae control.

i used one many, many years ago...during a waterchange, forget to plug it back in, didn't notice till next waterchange. if i could get one free, i still would not bother!

I have one on my pond. I do not have one on either tank.

Save your money and buy better lights. If you do freshwater on a big scale like a pond it's a must. In saltwater its one of those things that half the people you talk to use them, the other half don't. I used one 10 years ago. It was "the thing to do". I used it for about 2 years. Took it out because of space and never noticed a difference.

I think it is a worthy investment especially on a somewhat large tank like yours. I had a minor battle with dinos recently and I believe it helped to get them back under control. It adds a bit of clarity to the water, and if set up properly, can help mitigate disease and algae blooms. Either way, definitely can't hurt.

If you've got the money & the time for a big pool like that a UV wouldn't be a bad thing IMO. (definitely a great tool) Then again, sometimes you can keep it simple...
I'm always trying to win chess games in less moves... ;) GL.

When you set it up make sure you put a gate valve downstream of the unit so you can dial the flow back to the proper level. Most UV need very slow flow to be effective.

I run the DEBARY 25w uv rated up to 1500lts.
If you go to their site and read up on the info you will see that set up correctly with right size and flow it can be very effective with ICH.
About 4 months ago we suffered our first ICH outbreak and lost 8 fish. It is impossible to catch and QT all our fish because we also run a 380g with a lot of tangs.
We let the remaining fish settle after the outbreak, installed the uv and 4 months later have restocked the tank. We have once again had a small outbreak of ICH that has showed up as a few dots, but not got any worse at all.
It says it will kill the free floating stage only, which will not rid you tank of ICH but will stop the multiplying stage.
We have now been ich free for 3 weeks after losing nothing and believe very much it was the UV that did it.
They are expensive units but I wouldn't buy any other brand as this does what it says 100% unlike some of the cheaper units.
So although we now have ICH in the tank, we have to learn to manage it and the UV goes a long way in helping.

I don't care what a manufacturer says, uv light in the wattage and dwell times used in aquaria is ineffective against a eukaryotic organism, which includes Protozoans, which is what cryptocaryon is. It's microbiology 101.

We will have to agree to disagree. This company have been designing & testing their products for years. I believe them and the claims. I have full confidence that this product did what it claimed to do. But as normal in this hobby opinions vary on all sorts of things :)
