Uv Sterilizers

Needed in either tank? No

Helpful for water quality in FOWLR , Yes (clears phyto and small organisms that cloud water)

And could be detrimental in a reef tank for the same reason it is good in a FOWLR, it kills microscopic food that feed corals

I started a thread about UVs on reefs and a few people do run them and I do plan to order one and run it on my 75 gallon. Not a have to have type of thing but will keep your water pretty clear.

I have one and like it. Good for cleaning the water. Some claim it will rid your tank of ich etc. I disagree. it will kill ich though. It would all depend on where you stand with your tank. I think the proper amount of LR and a good skimmer are much better investments. If you have that and $$ is burning a hole in your pocket...Go for it.

Really would not cause a problem no... but we spend money on Phyto for our corals and the UV just zaps it right back out of the water, sort of self defeating is all.
