UV sterilizers??

Does anyone use these things? Are they a gimmick? They sound good in theory but how well do they actually work? I hate the fact that I have to clean my glass every two or three days to keep it as clean as I like it to be. Will this help? Also, "IF" I decide to get one, I doubt I have enough room to place one in line w/ my return pump. How should I plumb it in? Would I need to just get a new pump and have it's own closed loop in my sump?

They have uses in terms of killing bacteria and possible some disease parasites, but they will not prevent green algae problems. Reducing nutrients is a better approach, but most tanks require glass cleaning every few days or so anyway. A magnetic scraper may make the job less troublesome.

I've heard, not sure if it's true or not that they're a very good thing to have if you have any tangs. Can anyone confirm that?

ps- heard this from the LFS and it sounded kind of fishy..

so if I already have a healthy tank for the most part I probably won't see any advantages??

I wouldn't see advantages in my tank, in any case. My fish, including tangs, never get sick that I can see. It may be more useful if you have VERY sick-prone fish, such as seahorses.
