Vacuuming sand out of tank???

I was thinking about taking a wet/dry vac and cleaning it out good. Then siphoning as much water out of the tank. Then use the wet/dry to vacuum out the sand and then get it out of the vacuum container. That way I don't have to worry about scratching the tank at all. Does it need to have water over it to store?

It's going to be rinsed and cleaned anyway. Thoughts???

I was kind of thinking the dust pan method would work.

Not to sound ungrateful but if you suck it out with your shop vac I am not sure I wanna put it in my tank, I just dont know what has been in your shopvac before this. Oil, soapy water, solvents, wet glue from your carpet, just scares me a little.

I can bring over some buckets and help "shovel" the sand outa the tank, it would be tommorow night though.

Whatever method you choose be sure to not scratch your tank. Its worth more than the sand.

I'm with you. I didn't really feel comfortable using the shop vac after I thought about it a few minutes.

I think I'm going to just drain it as much as possible and then whoever wants sand can get it out themselves and I'll help as long as we're careful. I used a dustpan on my last tank and it worked fine. Right now I have Levon15 and Fazgood wants some but Levon15 has first dibs on how much.
I'd hate to put a scratch in a tank I just sold.

What's later Sat. looking like for you Levon15? The reason I ask is you were wanting some rock. You could swing by my place and then we could head to roys (where the rock is) only a few minutes apart. Let me know. I'm waiting to hear from roy to see what time. It is his house after all :D

use a canister filter with poly filter in between the media compartments to make sure it dont go back to the pump

Me too! You boys be careful. Keep all scratches on the bottom of the tank. :D I'm sure it'll be fine.

Yeah, I think dustpan would work fine. I used a frisbee last time--don't know why I didn't think of a dustpan, that would have been easier.

Saturday will be busy but early evening should be fine. After 6 or so. Let me knwo what time works for Roy. I'll bring buckets and a new dustpan with no cleaners on it or anything. I wont even touch the sides of the tank.

Depending on what time roy's wanting to start. I have several coming for rock so I might have to be there earlier but I can stop and buy a dust pan and I have buckets so I could always just bring it with me. We'll just coordinate once I know from roy. Cool?

If you take a plastic bag and put the sand in it while still inside the tank, poke a few holes in the very bottom and the water will drain out w/o taking the sand too much. Just a pencil size hole. That will help you seperate the majority pretty easy.

Roy what time is looking good for you on Saturday Roy? my wife just informed me the mother in law is coming over here for dinner, I might be over later even. Like say 7 or after. Let me know if I am getting into nuisance territory...

I would scoop out would could be saftly scooped then syphon the sand out... You'll probably have to put additional water in several times...
