When I go to do my first vacuuming of the LS, should I be replacing the sand each time. For example if for say a 1 cup of LS is removed then I should put a fresh cup back in? Will that effect my ammonia levels at all.
Generally you shouldn't vacuum the sand because it pulls out many of the beneficial organisms needed to filter your tank. However, often people will vacuum part of it when there is algae growing in or on the sand (which represents other problems). Also, when you do need to add or replace sand, do it very slowly because you can start a mini-cycle which could result in ammonia being present in your tank.
I have alot of drop off from blowing my LR with a turkey baster, should i just hand mix it into the sand, or suck it out? Im not talking alot of sand, just what is sucked into the vacuum while trying to clean off the top of the sand.
Just leave it. When the sand is flying through the water your skimmer will get most of the junk. And, how deep is your sandbed? Try not to disturb it--do you have snails, because they perform natural stirring of your sand without doing damage to the filtration process. In many respects just let nature take its course.
Forgot to mention that if you have corals and sand gets on them you should gently blow it off because it can really bother them. Otherwise, leave it alone.
I would advise against even stirring it as mentioned a few posts up. Like also said, let nature take its course. This is why reefs are so much cooler that freshwater!
I agree with scuba--sometimes the hardest thing for people new to the hobby is too much interference. They can't keep their hands out of the tank! Also, the only time I have ever received advice about siphoning the sand is when I had a dino. outbreak. But, the siphon hose barely touched the sand. So, again, leave it alone.
Yeah, reef keeping is quite different than the freshwater hobby. I highly recommend not vacuuming the substrate. This is what your cleanup crew is for. Let them do it.
