Valida Help

I have or have had numerous forms of Valida but can't get decent color out of them. I don't have trouble with other sps and my parameters are all good. I got a couple of sweet pieces from a fellow reefer a while back and they look like crap now. Whats the trick to getting color out of these?

Valida Help

I'm blasting mine with light right now 250w xm 10k's and it's coloring up nicely, and it's getting some pretty high flow seems to like it so far.

Don't blast them with light. Vallida do well with medium light. When mine gets too much, the deep green body and purple tip get washed out. My giant colony of Vallida is about 15" tall and the base sits on my sandbed and the tip 1/2 way up my 30" deep tank. I'm using 400W radium and the tip is about 25" from my bulb.

I crush mine with light and have very deep purple tips. Mine sits about 1/4 of the way down just off center of my 400W radium.

I had a similar issue with coloration on a validia. My millies and stags were doing fine, but the validia was not purple like it was supposed to be. Took out the colony, dipped it in iodine solution and found....RED BUGS! Treated the tank with interceptor and four weeks later, nice purple validia. Might want to dip you colony and see if you have bugs.

Pests aside, as that's a whole seperate problem. Mine likes lots of light and flow, I've not found any amount of either to be too much for the valida. I do see that pieces that break off and drop to where I can't reach them have the crazy green that the high light colony does not have, but not the crazy purple on the tips of the colony.

As far as pests go, they are RB magnets.

Post a pic of your coral. A lot of things that people call Vallida is actually Nana. Also, a lot of other things also affect color. This includes flow, water clarity, and nutrient. I believe flow plays a big part also. My Vallida looks like this...

I wish I had your answer! My ORA tricolor is the worst looking coral in my tank - it's almost bone white.

My ORA tricolor valida, has very purple tips, but, it does not have that nice green color everywhere else like the awesome colony above.
Can the ORA tricolor get that green?
