Various Cleaner Wrasses

RockinSmall

Keepin it Spicey
I am hoping to add several different specied of cleaner wrasses to my new 150g aquarium. Are there any issues with mixing these types of fishes?

The cleaner wrasses (plural) will drive your fish nuts. Even one could make your fish crazy especially if the fish you have are unwilling to be cleaned. And finally, cleaner wrasses have no value as parasite prevention fish.

More than one cleaner wrasse in a tank that size could be bad news. They will try to clean ur fish constantly. I have one in my 120 with no problems, but occasionally I do notice my fish will chase him if he bugs too much. But that doesn't happen too often

Oh, and if you are going to only do one, I recommend that the one come from Africa as they are more likely to live.

ok, well, i dont wanna mess with an annoying fish, so i will scratch those off my list and go with the 5 bangii cardinals.... good idea?

Watch with those bangaii's. They will be fine as juvi's but once they mature they will kill eachother off until there is a pair. Not always the case but is a big possibility

Just on a side note, AFAIK cleaner wrasses are VERY territorial (by the nature of their "cleaning station" setup, I would assume). I believe Joe from Atlantis Marine World said he was unable to keep more than one pair in that 20,000g reef :eek2: .

What would you expect in a tank that small. lol :hmm4:

Yeah, there is just one pair in the AMW tank and they are constaintly on the move from fish to fish. Yes, they do spawn regularly.

Agree with you.
The ones we catch here on the east coast are very hardy.
But they dont like opposition and generally the biggest one in the tank will eventually eliminate its opposition.

I agree. I started with 6 in my 400 and slowly they thinned to a pair that now spawn successfully 4-5x/ year.

I had just fallen in love with the Hawaiian Cleaner wrasse, wanted 2 or three... As always, I am thankful for the reefcentral resource.. oh, and that i took the time to ask!

I am thankful that you asked first, and took the advise given -- would be a lot less fish lost if more people did it the way you just did.

Amen!
Sadly, most of these questions seem to be from people who have already made a decision and are looking to justify it. When a thread starts out "Has anyone ever....?" That's a giveaway. Someone, somewhere has done everything in this hobby with some (often short term) success. that doesn't mean its a good idea.

LOL, yea.. those are my least favorite threads.. "I bought this fish... now what do i do?" I know what is appropriate and what is not, for the most part, I just never took notice of the cleaner wrasse or had any interest till now.
