vectra calibration?

I picked up one of these to use as a skimmer feed and its perfect. Exactly what i needed. I am a little confused on the calibration process however. How I have it set up makes the process very quirky because the skimmer starts do drain as soon as it shuts off, and its very difficult to see and set the minimum flow level as the output is my skimmer and not a exposed return line.

Can someone help clarify why exactly these need to be calibrated, and what can actually happen to the pump if its not. As in what is the serious damage the manual refers to?

I am not fully understanding the purpose of this other than to limit min and max flow to a systems specs? what am I missing.

You will not need to calibrate your pump since it's being used to power a skimmer, and there is no chance of damage.
