Velvet has destroyed my tank.

Within the past 3 days I have lost all of my fish to velvet. It came on so quickly and I have no idea from where. Seriously no idea, I have not added any fish.

I currently have 2 clowns, mimic, klein butterfly, and an indigo hamlet dying in my frag tank with nothing to do, they're all too far for help. I just removed them from my display.

Honestly I need some advice and some motivation to move forward. I never thought i'd get so upset about some fish dying but losing my melanurus and angel 2 days ago really bummed me out. melanurus was one of my first fish.

I have an sps only system and with it being fallow I'm not sure how to keep nitrate at an acceptable range.

Wow. Really sorry to hear. There are so many people on here with so much knowledge (unfortunately, I'm not one of them). I'm sure you will get some great advice.

Again, sorry about your fish.

Sorry for your loss, all you can do is pick up and start again, the past will get further away, I have 2 total loss in my QT.

my biggest concern now (because why dwell on what has happened) is that I have very high end sps, and need to keep nitrate stable. I have some reef raft wolverine, purple plasma X2, large colonies, loripes, very precious cargo.

Man, i'm going through this right now. Added a powder brown tang and 4 days later I lost all my previous 9 fish even my first ever fish I got when I started this hobby.

They ALL died.

I don't know what to do and am seriously considering selling $20k worth of crap on ebay and getting the hell out of this hobby.

What worries me is that one single fish can destroy thousand and thousands of dollars of life. Even after letting my tank sit fallow what's to say it's not going to happen again? I read just yesterday that someone after a QT (treated with cuppermine) period of 8 weeks they added a PBT to a tank and it wiped out the ENTIRE tank.

Once your tank gets ich you're done. It's impossible to fish 12+ fish out of a large established reef. You literally have to let them all die and fallow again only to have another fish potentially wipe the tank out.

Ich and Velvet are nightmares and almost downright deal breakers for entering this hobby. I NEVER thought keeping fish would be this hard.

If I treat a fish with cuppermine for 4+ weeks and QT for a total of 8 and he can STILL get ich then all efforts seem futile.

sorry for your loss, until such time that you can add fish again, might want consider coral foods, amino's, and maybe kn03 dosing to keep the nitrates up if the coral foods and amino's dont

That is awful, sorry to hear. Maybe get some reefroids or some other coral food and feed the everloving crap out of them? Or some people here dose nitrates, thats mostly on SPS systems I don't follow since its not my thing, but 90% sure I've ready JBNY dosing nitrates.

Well I've been dosing Me amino regularly. The dumb thing is that all these fish just left a cupramine qt from ich. Back into the tank and a month later this happens. If it wasn't for my sps I think I'd be liquidating.

I've noticed no mention of a refugium or water change, being that you've been in the hobby for quite awhile, you might have done that. I run a massive growth of cheato in mine along with grape algae and nitrate's are almost 0 its the hardness and phosphate are my biggest problem. 2 cleaner shrimps keep any hitch hikers in check, we found since we put fugi mud in the sump it has kept 6 salt tanks happy 150,125,90,85,29qt and a 30g frag. just for giggles did you change and get a new salt supply lately.....I did and the mag. was off the scale

Oh I've been using reef crystals for a while. Hate it but it's cheaper. I have a solid fuge with a lot of Chaeto, it's enormous now all bare bottom so I can clean easier

Same problem here just lost a male perc and my dr. Tang. All just did a fresh water dip on my puffer and purple tangm hopfully that will help them. Cant catch all of them grrrrrr. What a mess

When's the last time you added a fish? Velvet and crypto can be dormant for up to 6 weeks and be asymptomatic for up to 4 weeks. So my bet is you added a fish or foreign water in the last 10 weeks that was infected.

Fresh water dip does nothing for ich and only temporarily helps velvet

I assume it was from a wild colony I got. Really didn't add anything in this time frame. I plan on trying to get some anthias in there for my come back and this will give me time to learn more about keeping a number of them. Looks like my hamlet and clowns are past it, they will do a copper qt when I have the time to set it all up since work has me pulling my hair out.
