Hey fellow reefers so I am writing this to hopefully get the the answer I'm looking for...and I'm hoping you guys say "yeah you should be fine" but I truly want your honest opinions!! I recently purchased a vertex omega 180i skimmer during Black!!!it was a killer deal I could pass up!!! I do However plan on doing this tank build right, and if I I'm not getting the rite performance out of this skimmer then I outa replace it with the right size based on the manufacture specs...but If I anticipate on getting a larger tank in the future I think I should keep it and use it for time being. what are your guys thoughts???? Can I use it on my 65 gal. Or do I send it back and get the correct size

This skimmer is WAY!!!! oversized for that tank and will not skim properly on that tank. An Omega 130 would be more suitable even if it was heavily stocked.

If I had it already... I would use it on that tank..
It is oversized but I don't believe it will be a huge issue..
You should certainly give it a try and adapt as needed..

He will have almost guaranteed issues. Oversizing a Vertex skimmer and the issues this causes is well documented here and elsewhere. Unless he is upgrading to 150g or larger in the next year, I would send it back for a more appropriate skimmer IMHO.

Got one also on Black Friday for my 120 setup. Easily adjusted and very well built unit. I`d say it would work fine on your system especially if your bio load is heavy. jmho

Heavy bioload on a 65g is like a light bioload on the 120g. What is your bioload on the 120g that your 180i is working well with?

1 flame angel
1 coral beauty
1 PB tang
1 melanarus wrasse
1 starry blenny
1 yellow watchman goby
1 banghai cardinal
1 bluethroat trigger
1 pinktalil trigger

Not a light bio load but Skimmer keeps up and is more consistent than the sro 5000int that I took out. I`m happy with it

Yeah not too light, pretty medium and if your triggers are a decent size having 2 predators helps. Feeding has a lot to do with it too. Good to hear that your having good results with the skimmer though. I just think the OP won't have such a good experience on such a small tank and if he has the option to exchange, it might be better to do that now.

Thanks gentleman!! I truly appreciate the feedback, the consensus seems to me that I go with the appropriate size skimmer for my tank!
